I have started chemo and will have a guided mushroom trip real soon. The therapist recommended taking lion's mane with niacin before during and after the trip. I think I would like to take mushroom supplements for the duration of the chemo. When I did radiation I took either turkey tail extract or a blend, forget which but at the time I was believing the Oriveda line that both hot water and alcohol are needed to get a good yield and that only mycelium has a high enough concentration to be worth extracting. Now their information is somewhat different and confusing. Also a little less technical information than in the past. Different mushrooms seems to be extracted different ways

I am trying to determine which is the best mushroom/brand/ extraction method for taking during chemo and also during the soon upcomoing trip. I can get different ,mushrooms for each?

I’ve taken QOL labs immunoKinoko 750 ahcc with acylated alpha- glucans per my Nat onco for 7 yrs . Best of luck on the majic mushroom trip . I did it as a teen in the 70’s and probably ten times as an adult . I’ve got some in the cupboard . Maybe I’ll do it by the fire during the holidays ? Mushrooms are great . I love wild mushrooms . Take care

So i can recommend ayahuasca to the open minded. A form of spiritual healing that helped me during this pc life . 🤙🏽🏄🏻‍♂️🏄🏻‍♂️🏄🏻‍♂️🏄🏻‍♂️🏄🏻‍♂️🏄🏻‍♂️

yes on Monday next a major mushroom trip. Was trying to find a suitable Lion's Mane or other supplement to highlight the trip and for immune support in chemo.

Tell us more about this guided trip. Are you having to travel? To Oregon? How did you make arrangements? Is there a web site to facilitate this? How about the cost? I'm just full of questions, aren't I. I've seen the documentaries and I am very interested.

yes yes my amigo … psilocybin has an enormous anecdotal knowledge base of helping people in numerous ways. Mental uplift and depression curing being the top applications. They are a great party favor as well. Guaranteed to keep everyone in stitches laughing for an hour or two. They are being decriminalized and legalized in places like Oregon and Colorado and Oakland, California. The public just starting to realize how important they are.

I raised the small northern pacific coast species, in wide mouth mason jars , for several years. Probably produced several hundred pounds in that time span. This was in Central Texas back in the mid 70s. They are very easy to grow at home with todays simplified methods and supplies. Everything you need is available on Amazon and spore prints are sold in Oakland, and Canada on line. Dried in the oven or one of those plastic dehydrators that sit on a kitchen countertop …. then vacuum packed with a foodsaver and stored in a freezer they keep for years. These are ‘ extremely “ bitter to the taste but well worth it. The “ high “ is very pleasant , fairly mild, laugh inducing and not scary at all ( imho ).

Just say’in

I (and probably others here) would like to try psilocybin.

Do you have more specific details?

Thank you

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply tocesces

you buy spore prints or syringe kits ……. and those mushroom medium kits from Amazon and grow them at home. Back when I grew mine there were no laws about psilocybin mushrooms, millions of them grew in the fields in Texas every spring. Spore kits were available in the mail cheap. Anyone can order spore prints or kits legally in all states except California, Idaho and Delaware ( or some state back east ), they are legal in 47 states. most web spore suppliers ship to California anyway…. and the city of Oakland has decriminalized psilocybin mushrooms and I’m told spores are available at the mushroom church in Oakland and on Oakland street corners down town in the refurbished brick street area. Just Google “ buy psilocybin spore prints “ or “ psilocybin Oakland California “ for spore sources and there are just zillions of growing videos on YouTube.

Note: growing pure slants of psilocybin mycelium can be tricky and takes a lot of care and practice. Sterile lab practices are a must. ( pun there if you get it ). Times have changed since my era and they are much easier these days. The videos spell it out clearly.

Something else I think I should mention is that getting high from psilocybin mushrooms is only an occasional thing. You cannot repeatedly get high from them in the short term. If you ate them ( 7 grams of bitter fresh dried carpafores ) today, it would be three to five clean weeks before you could have the same experience again. Eating more does not recreate the first experience . However …. That they have a valuable medicinal mental effect is well known and is what us croakers here on the group should be chasing if they want that valuable psilocybin benefit. In that case , eating a few grams ( 3-5 ) every day will induce that beneficial mental , Xanax like but way better , benefit. Being high from them in that case would be unnoticeable.

😁😁😁

""Everything you need is available on Amazon and spore prints are sold in Oakland, and Canada online. ""

I meant for dummies. Maybe some Amazon links?

And clearer directions for folks like me who haven't a clue about what "sport prints", "syringe kits" or slants are and how it all fits together?

Maybe a few recommended youtubes and some websites?

You assume way more implicit knowledge than I think most of us have.

If it's not too much effort would you please consider ABCing it for us.

Maybe with a warning that "This should only be done in jurisdictions where it is legal. Check your local laws before proceeding"

Kaliber profile image

Amazon , search Amazon for “ mushroomsupply.com all in one mushroom grow kit in a bag “ …3# and 5# sizes growing medium ….starting at $34. Also….. Google “ sporeworks.com Psilocybe cabensis , 4 pak of syringes “. $55. Search YouTube for “ how to grow magic mushrooms ( beginner friendly ) simple and fast “ for an easy video using the above.

Doesn’t get any easier than this. Naturally , if it’s illegal where you live , you will be breaking the law, proceed at your own risk. Magic mushrooms are close to going legal in many states , even federally … they are WAY at the very bottom of any law enforcement list. Just say’in.

A sport print is a casual jacket with a printed as opposed to a woven pattern. A spore print is another matter altogether. The first three D printing even before there were nerds.

Last year whole going thru shit, I bought spores and all the Uncle Ben's fixings. Really needed a brain reset. So emotional when discussing my cancer and the reality of the future.

So the gathering began and supplies still sits in my closet for another day!

When I felt like shit, needed something to change that. Then RT and Keytruda kicked in and Mood changed.

Did plenty of shrooms back in the day. Would have to escape the wife today to enjoy them ( not the best of choices for a guide, for me ) . But my attitude changed with my healing. I guess I'll stick to my cannabis for now, and keep the UB for dinner!

I use the lions mane and turkey tail mushroom compound daily. Also the 50 mg niacin. Instead of taking a trip, my wife and I use the Microdosing, which I find is like Prevogen on steroids. It enhances a clarity in the brain that treatments take away. Regarding chemo, I found the best treatment for the low points during six months of chemo was marijuana. I never felt the buzz I got as a kid. It just removed the pain during those low periods. I’m curious whether the psilocybin will do the same. Please post if psilocybin is the route you choose.

I’ve done it three times post dx and ayahuasca twice . All with great lasting spiritual relief . I lost fear of death from pc my first time with ayahuasca .. A week later, i got my first all clear from the MO . I’m not saying it cured the pc I had just finished imrt and was doing Lupron plus another adt . but prior to knowing I was clear I had already dropped the fear . No looking back . Im grateful to be alive and not to be in terrible pain. I’ve got all of the gripes and pains of a man with no T …. Sarcopenia, cognition loss, osteopenia, man tits , n9 balls , but no signs of pc . F pc ! It’s the The enemy of mankind ! No friend of ours! Free you mind and the rest shall follow . Take care . Live life! Pluck the day!

"therapist recommended taking lion's mane with niacin before during and after the trip. "

I would be dubious.

You can never know the dosing.

And complex biological systems are unpredictable without clinical trials.

If it is powerful, you just don't know if it will help or hurt.

For instance, many people treat their prostate cancer with cannabis.

Prostate Cancer cells are well known to have extra cannabinoid receptors. Cannabis probably spurs the growth of prostate cancer... though without clinical trials you just don't know.

Logic doesn't work with complex biological systems.

PeteN profile image
PeteN in reply tocesces

”Cannabis probably spurs the growth of prostate cancer”? Where in the world did you come up with that? In fact, cannabis has been shown to be anti-androgenic and may cause increased apoptosis and cell inhibition in prostate cancer cells.

cesces profile image
cesces in reply toPeteN

Dr. Snuffy Myers clinical observations of those of his patients that were evangelizers of heavy self medication with Cannabis. His entire case load was composed of thousands of prostate cancer patients.

"anti-androgenic" irrelevant

"may cause increased apoptosis and cell inhibition in prostate cancer cells."

I am doubtful you have any high quality peer reviewed clinical trial evidence for that. But please... prove me wrong.

Given the increased number of cannabis receptors in prostate cancer cells, I think we can agree that cannabis is likely to have an effect on prostate cancer cells.

Until we get peer reviewed clinical trial evidence, I am inclined to go with Dr. Myers' clinical observations.

When and if I end up in hospice, I do intend to use cannabis for pain control. But not before then.

Thank you

cannabis effects people differently. no guaranty that it will help with pain at a dose you can live with. best to try it now to see how you do and if you will be able to function stoned. i just started chemo and decided to do RSO concurrently. I am stopping for a few days to do a mushroom trip. Will resume after. There is a very big difference in psycho-activity depending on how cannabis is ingested. Smoking or vaping is the fastest way to get high. Edibles are slower and will also get you high. Suppositories are also fast acting but have much less psycho-activity. I am currently taking step 3 which is about .2 gms of resin with 70 plus percent active canabanoids. Definitely feel a difference between oral and rectal oral administration.

"These tumors were treated with a range of cannabinoids, including WIN55,212-2, CBD-BDS (biological drug substance) plus Docetaxel, CBD-BDS plus bicalutamide, JWH015, JWH015 plus SA2 (specific antagonist), and Chromenopyrazoledione 4 (PM49, a synthetic cannabinoid). The duration of treatment varied from 14 to 38 days. Cannabinoids were administered orally, intraperitoneally, subcutaneously, or intravenously at doses between 0.5 and 100 mg/kg body weight.

3. Discussion

This systematic review highlights six studies reporting the effectiveness of both synthetic and phytocannabinoids in in vivo/xenograft models for prostate cancer. In this review, we have gathered detailed information on the study population, group size, cell lines that were used for inoculation and tumor generation, intervention that was used for treatment (natural/synthetic cannabinoid), dose size, route of administration, duration of the study, and reduction of the tumor size (Table 2). Two earlier systematic reviews [45,53,54] briefly explored the effect of cannabis in experimental models of prostate cancer, such as in vitro studies [42,47] and urological tumors [53,54]."

spencoid2 profile image

basically skimming the articles and studies because bio-chemistry is way beyond me. so far it looks like CBD is potentially the cannabanoid useful against prostate cancer.

I started the RSO regime which is temporarily on hold while doing a guided mushroom trip. Will start again three days after.

However I am wondering what the bet strains might be. I was using a concentrate that I made a lot of and had analyzed. It is close to 64% THC 9 active form but quite low on CBD, only about .4% CBD active form.

I also made an extract of which i might have enough form AC-DC plants of which I grew just two spindly plants and maybe got an ounce and a half of extract (BTW all my extracts are cold ethanol quick wash with sonication evaporation and subsequent decarboxilation. I have not had the AC-DC tested but can? Typically AC-DC is high on CBD and lower in THC but if you look at the samples tested by "reputable" labs the values are all over the map.

So does it make sense to use the AC-DC especially if I have it tested and it is high on CBD?

MORE PETRI DISH

It all looks hopeful, but most drugs that look promising in petri dish never work in real life.

That we have not gotten any further than this in well over 50 years is not so promising.

"EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH

We tested pure cannabinoids and extracts from Cannabis strains enriched in particular cannabinoids (BDS), on AR-positive

(LNCaP and 22RV1) and -negative (DU-145 and PC-3) cells, by evaluating cell viability (MTT test), cell cycle arrest and

apoptosis induction, by FACS scans, caspase 3/7 assays, DNA fragmentation and TUNEL, and size of xenograft tumours

induced by LNCaP and DU-145 cells.

KEY RESULTS

Cannabidiol (CBD) significantly inhibited cell viability. Other compounds became effective in cells deprived of serum for 24 h.

Several BDS were more potent than the pure compounds in the presence of serum. CBD-BDS (i.p.) potentiated the effects of

bicalutamide and docetaxel against LNCaP and DU-145 xenograft tumours and, given alone, reduced LNCaP xenograft size.

CBD (1–10 mM) induced apoptosis and induced markers of intrinsic apoptotic pathways (PUMA and CHOP expression and

intracellular Ca2+

). In LNCaP cells, the pro-apoptotic effect of CBD was only partly due to TRPM8 antagonism and was

accompanied by down-regulation of AR, p53 activation and elevation of reactive oxygen species. LNCaP cells differentiated to

androgen-insensitive neuroendocrine-like cells were more sensitive to CBD-induced apoptosis.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

These data support the clinical testing...."

One of our departed members recommended, and I am using, Turkey Tail from Oriveda. Expensive due to special extraction process.

spencoid2 profile image
spencoid2 in reply tocigafred

i used Turkey tail from Oriveda during radiation. i did a lot of reading online and it seemed at that time that very few providers extracted and tested in a way to insure consistency of active ingredients. At that time Paul Stamets was on the corporate money grab and was pushing all sorts of bullshit. So I settled on Oriveda. Now their web site has about 20% of the information it used to and they seems to be switching to fruiting bodies (not totally sure of this because there is so little information) instead of mycleium which they used to say was the only way to get high potency with an extraction process using both hot water and alcohol.

So at this point I am totally unclear as to what to buy. A friend has a big log with a huge Turkey Tail flush on it. I am going to get a few pounds and use it for teas as the Asians have for thousands of years. If someone can figure out what extraction method really makes sense and whether to use fruiting bodies or mycelium I would be appreciative.
