If you are about to have a dental procedure (Teeth extraction, root canal) make sure you tell your dentist you are taking those drugs as they may cause osteonecrosis of the jaw as a result of such procedure, a nasty thing....

I had to go thru such procedure and my dentist wont let it go until I told him exactly which drugs I take for PC treatment.

My guess is that not every dentist is aware of such contraindication

Hey dorke ! I’ve taken prolia for 2 yrs 4 months now. I had a crown gone bad removed about a yr ago. We were going to install a post.. ooops the first post crushed in , he used the next larger size. It also collapsed .. he put in cadaver bone in hope to graft the hole. I’ll see soon . But I expect to have this hole in my jaw to the end. Kentucky smile so to speak. I just got a nuclear body scan. Doc says I have a fractured l #3 anterior rib.. Scan shows all of my joints are dissolving . My bone density last dexa scan showed that it had improved 10% since last scan . Whoo hoo! Now I see that prolia doest stop the joints tendons and ligaments from depletion . I’ve never had a broken rib before this. Arthritic pains runs through every joint. Hands and feet especially painful. These bone drugs might increase bone density to a point. But why now do I a have a fractured rib after two years on prolia . It really is “ dammed if we do, dammed if we don’t”! 💪

Soon after being diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, I went on hormone therapy and had 10 sessions of radiation to my upper and lower spine, which seemed to help quite a bit to relieve pain in my back. My first oncologist started me on Xgeva which I had about 3 times. I noticed that everytime I had the infusion, one tooth with a root canal would develop an infection and swelling at the gum of the tooth. I happened to be reading about Xgeva and jawbone deterioration. After that, I wouldn't allow anymore Xgeva infusions, and I stopped having the gum swelling around the root canal tooth. The tooth that had the root canal previously developed an issue called root resorbtion, soon after it was done, which was causing pain for a year or two before settling down. It still has issues and needs dental work, but at least I was lucky to find out about the bone deterioration before continuing with the Xgeva infusions, especially since I'm considering a tooth implant to replace the root canal tooth.

I've had oral surgery twice so far after Xgeva injections for three years. It caused dead bone in the jaw that had to be removed. The procedure of a bone removal isn't pleasant to say the least. I have since been taken off of Xgeva but my oral surgeon said it stays in your body for a while it looks like I will be having a third surgery in about six months for the removal of more bone. I don't know the benefits of Xgeva but the toll it took on my body to me was definitely not worth it. Never give up Never surrender. Leo

My doc told me these bone drugs continue working for at least 5 years after you stop using them.

It seems to me a lot of docs prescribed these bone meds as soon as you get on ADT...I pushed back and insisted on a bone scan...results of the scan were normal and I'm due for a second one in August.

If you need the bone meds then certainly take them but have a bone scan before. Also, it is my understanding that bone loss occurs early so if you get out 12 months in good bone health you may not need these meds for awhile.

My mo prescribed prolia after a dexa showed osteopenia. I think it was a bit late . I had a year and a half of bad antibiotics for UTI’s and that took down my joints also.

In this fight for 3 1/2 years now. Going to an oral surgeon very soon. Have a bone mass on one side of my lower jaw and a growth under a lower back tooth on the other side which is very painful. Oral surgeon says that I can't get in for another 2 1/2 weeks. Pain is terrible. Won't last 2 weeks. Holiday is over and going to call the oral surgeon in the morning. All else fails, may go to the ER .

On prolia three years now. Been to dentist once for filling replacement. No problem dentist was comfortable with Prolia. Started Testogel three days ago as Testosterone has been zero for six years. One really gets tired of this insideous disease.
