Writing for a friend. He was diagnosed with moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma in the prostecic bed that is close to the rectal tumor

A friend of 45 years called me to say after having had his rectum removed 2 1/2 years ago there is a recurrence of cancer. I thought when we spoke he had rectal cancer. I was surprised when he said 'moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma in the prostecic ?? bed that is close to the rectal tumor from whence it came and was surgically removed. He also said it is in the urethra near the prostate and mentioned the original tumor was around or close to the prostate that they cleaned up during the original surgery.

This kind of threw me since, from what I am seeing, could it be prostate cancer that migrated to the rectum? I'm confused over this. He is 79 and I'm not sure how much research he's done.

Can anyone make sense of what he wrote to me. It is sounding like prostate cancer, though he is not saying anything about the gland itself.

He is trying to decide on the chemo they are suggesting be done that will be for about 6 months.

They said they want to hit it hard with Irinotecan, Flurouracil and Calcium Leucovorin. I see this used for bladder cancer.

Can anyone give me some direction what to research and make any sense of this. His wife died, a very good friend 3 years ago. I would like to be a stand in, in some way to give him some support and an advocate, but i need to understand this better. I doubt he could help me much in understanding. He's in San Diego. I'm in the SF Bay Area.

Thanks very much...

*** and thank you for the answers on the spinal compression questions I had for my husband. We have a beyond serious cancer epidemic. I look at the bigger picture in wishing to find ways to lessen the suffering of PCa. Thank you ALL.. You are sincerely appreciated, beyond words...Bluebird11

Yes, it can be spread from the prostate to the rectal wall. But this sounds like rectal cancer that has spread to the prostate area. The kind of chemo he is getting suggests it is a primary GI tumor rather than a prostatic origination. I'm sure they did a histological analysis when they removed his rectum, so they would know which it is.

Thank you. This saved me confusion, since he isn't clear about his diagnosis.
