What Kind Of Tea To Drink?

CarrotBoy profile image
61 Replies

In my search for good teas to fight prostate cancer (Gleason 7), I have found a few that may help. From this March to present, my main tea has been Jason Winters tea. The "Original formulas" have oolong tea, red clover and either and sage or chapparal. Jason Winters verified that these shrunk his own tumor(s) completely. Has anyone had any luck with this brand? This may be keeping my cancer in check for now.

I have also stocked up on the common green tea, dandelion root tea, Yogi Detox tea, Yogi Kombucha tea, and one containing Chinese mint called Pu-Erh tea. Personally, I find the taste of lemon-ginger tea to be awful. Have you had any of these teas improve your cancer/conditions? Please share. Is caffeine-free tea really better? Is Stevia an acceptable sweetener? I read that hot tea is good because it mimmicks a fever and revs the immune system. Caution: I have seen reports that say that black tea help you cancer to grow, so avoid!

None of those teas is keeping your cancer in check. Green tea catechins were found to be ineffective:

You seem to believe any crackpot on the internet, while your cancer may still be curable. Steve Jobs regreted his decision to take such a path.

CarrotBoy in reply toTall_Allen

OK thanks. I'm drinking tea instead of sugary Coke., etc. I liked hearing you say I may still be curable, but how? Unless I find a cure soon, I will schedule surgery. Damn.

SBRT, brachytherapy, surgery - all have the same cure rates for GS 3+4.

For more general info on SEVERAL of the potentially curable initial treatment options (including but not limited to just surgery), see pages 36-40 of the NCCN Guidelines.

nccn.org/patients/guideline...

"The more you know...."

If you have never seen anything like this before, MSKCC's Dr. John Mulhall had some choice words to a general Patients' Conference a few years ago, concerning "expectations" for urinary/sexual side-effects following various initial treatments.

If you do decide upon surgery, you might also ask your doctor about things like "kegel" exercises, and/or a referral to a Physical Therapist specializing in male Pelvic Floor issues and rehabilitation, perhaps both before and after the procedure, if needed.

What Kind Of Tea To Drink?

Coffee.

Not that there's anything wrong with it. But I decided I probably would have to drink so much green tea for it (alone) to possibly make a big difference that I just went back to coffee, which I enjoy a LOT more (and may ALSO be beneficial).

BTW, has anybody tried just EATING the tea? I used to toss a few bags in when I was sauteing garlic, onions, olives/olive oil, etc for a sauce to put on veggies.

I both agree and disagree with TA. Don't expect miracles in a tea cup, but there is no reason to not think it could help (as could curcumin, D3, etc., etc.)

It doesn't matter.

in reply to

True. We're all going to die anyway. Whether from cancer or something else. So, who cares?

CarrotBoy profile image
CarrotBoy in reply to

Right. But the sober question could be ...are we ready to die NOW? Right now? Some of us will. Why is it, if we died today of in 10,000 days, it will always seem too soon.

in reply toCarrotBoy

True. Always seems too soon.

I was being tongue in cheek in response to the "it doesn't matter" comment.

Do Not believe perpetual naysayers or sales agents of SOC/big pharma.... Tea helps prostate cancer fight INDIRECTLY. Black and Green tea have polyphenols which are anti oxidant/anti inflammatory substances...help keep your general health good and immune system regulated. Green tea also has EGCG, a substance well known to cause apoptosis of cancer cells.

Still have doubts...go to pubmed(US Govt database) and type green tea -prostate cancer. or EGCG prostate cancer. You will see many studies.

Hi LearnAll, do you ever consume tea with milk(dairy) ?

LearnAll profile image
LearnAll in reply toCheerr

Yes..Cheerr...I studied a lot of research work about Milk and prostate cancer...because there was so much misinformation on internet and on this knowledge forum.

But, conclusion of all studies ended up accepting Milk as safe for prostate cancer patients. I use small amount of Milk and fructose in my morning tea (chai) and eat a big cup of fat free Yogurt in breakfast.

Milk and Yogurt if used in moderation are fine. Too much dairy have too much calories and can cause obesity, lipid increase and BMI increase... indirectly harming PCa pts.

I recommend you read a thread by tall Allen on this forum titled "cow juice is OK" posted about 4 or 5 months ago.

timotur profile image
timotur in reply toLearnAll

Whoa, I wouldn't say that one study means milk is ok-- as I remember the "cow juice" study was a prospective study based on self-reported diet history-- hardly conclusive.

Milk has probably the most direct association with with PCa risk of any food through increased serum insulin and IGF-1 concentrations, and abundant leucine for mTORC1 activation, which is upregulated in nearly 100 % of advanced human PCas.

Do you think drinking organic, green-grass-fed cows would be better or not?

timotur profile image
timotur in reply toCarrotBoy

Yes and no.

Yes, organic grassfed milk is safer with regard to avoiding cows treated with recombinant bovine growth factor (rBGF), which increases IGF-1 in humans, although inconclusive in its effect on cancer.

cancer.org/cancer/cancer-ca...

No, organic milk still has leucine, which is associated with mTORC activation as mentioned above.

in reply toLearnAll

Good advice. Why take anyone's opinion without checking data for yourself? clinicaltrials.gov is a wealth of info.

By the way, I have found that many people have confirmation bias and only reference studies or trials that confirm their opinions. Look at all of the studies and decide for yourself.

When pondering teas, check the tea bag materials for toxicity and glues that are used. Plastic material tea bags are not good. Do an internet search and find the brands that are not toxic. From my research, tazo teas bags THAT ARE LABELLED ORGANIC are ok, yogi tea bags and pukka tea bags are ok. We also use unbagged teas with tea strainers.

If you want to drink tea as a complementary treatment go for it but tea is not going to cure your prostate cancer. Look what happened to Bob Marley.

Go see a doctor and then drink your tea to your heart's content. JMO. Don't you think if tea was a cure for Prostate Cancer all the men in this group would be guzzling tea from sun up to sundown??? This group wouldn't even need to exist.

I don't look at it as a cure, just something more I do for myself to slow the process of the cancer.

hello Magnus,

Although he has not done it for years, there was a time in the past when when my husband was drinking a LOT of green tea, brewed in a particular manner, (certain temperature/time/closed container, etc.)

based upon some work done by the late Dr. Shutsung Liao of University of Chicago.....Japanese tea.....and I think his attitude was similar to yours....he went to the doctor and had traditional medical treatments but used the tea as something he was able to do for himself. Not sure why he quit....

for those who are interested, read his obit. :

Shutsung Liao, biochemist who studied role of hormones in prostate cancer, 1931-2014

news.uchicago.edu/story/shu...

.....Dr. Liao, by the way, said that he sprinkled dry tea on his food.....

.I also recall hearing one of my husband's doctors say that he also did this himself......

so, I "googled" after reading TallAllen's remark above and feeling kind of stung by it, to see what's going on these days re: natural things and found this article:

Natural Compounds in Prostate Cancer Prevention and Treatment: Mechanisms of Action and Molecular Targets

Down here in Singapore and Malaysia, we drink ‘teh tarik’ or loosely translated, pulled tea. We boil black tea leaves, add evaporated filled milk and a little sweet milk and sometimes add a couple of cardamom and viola-we get our teh tarik 😉

You should google tannic acid and prostate Cancer, there have been a few studies showing the beneficial effect eg :-

Tannic acid inhibits lipid metabolism and induce ROS in prostate cancer cells

Black tea contains the most tannins.

In all my years reading hundreds of stories about many mens' experience with Pca, not one has ever indicated that any tea or alternative folk or tribal liquid or solid has ever worked to reduce Pca tumors, let alone give a cure. I cannot accept advice from witch-doctors or any other self appointed wannabe healer who had not had their remedies tested by respectable unbiased trials.

One man I know recommended Essiac tea brewed up from boiling the roots of a herb and apparently it was part of healing methods by north American Indian tribe, but did it work? It worked no better than any placebo, and placebos have an atrocious record and curing cancer, the Emperor Of Maladies.

I would really welcome reliable test results for teas.

But I do drink about 1/2 Liter of green tea at breakfast of porridge. I do like coffee, and never too much. Clean water is probably 4,000% better than many teas mentioned in the post I reply to. I also take a few vitamin C tablets. I have ZERO idea if that helps me.

We all would like to discover a cure for Pca that is "staring us in the eye" while Big Pharma examines thousands of natural and manufactured chemicals that might have a demonstrable efficacy at least as good as most chemos which unfortunately have a pretty woeful record of working against Pca.

BTW, reports that black tea helps cancer grow were probably written by ppl with vested interests in producing alternative teas which have never become popular because they taste awful and have no caffeine, and are too expensive.

Meanwhile, My doctor has referred me on to getting a ZOOM tele talk with Lu177 providers Theranostics Australia, and methinks some more targeted beta radiation will do far more than any tea to kill the Pca cancer cells before they kill me.

I had a nice little 77km cycle ride in cool blustery conditions today, and right in the middle of bridge across a lake here I got a flat front tire, so I walked across half the bridge to a lookout area free of cycle and foot traffic where I replaced the inner tube after removing what looked like a piece of bone fragment with a sharp end that deflated the tire in seconds.

Was there a mystical message in this? Was God telling me something? Was the Demon of Cancer giving me a note? Naaaahhh, it was just Nature, letting shit happen, and I got home just fine.

I didn't need a cup of tea. I don't need dandelion tea, or a poke up the rear with a bunch of high brightness red LEDs, ah yes, all publicized on the Internet, infamous for its broadcasted BS, aka fake info.

Not a bad day really.

The argument is being streched to extreme by anti-tea people.......

Nobody is claiming that tea can cure prostate cancer.

All these people are basically saying is that tea has substances in it which empower your body and makes your body capable of giving a good anti cancer fight.

Does docetaxyl chemo cure everyone? No treatment is effective for every person..a big factor is whether it is aggressive variety or indolent type of PCa. There are a very small subgroup of patients ...for whom nothing is going to work...but its a very tiny fraction of all PCa cases.

The problem is that some people forgo all standard medical treatment in the hopes that tea (or other foods/vitamins) will stop their cancer in it's tracks. I am certainly not anti-tea, I am pro-science.

Tea is a very good ingredient for the general health and this is important because there is not only the prostate in your life, the human body is so complex as a whole. I drink green tea imported directly from china, oolong also, white tea is very good. And also pu'er (fermented tea) which are delightful. And not to end the subject, kombucha is a living liquid full of pro biotic, good microbe and the mix is so complex the analysis is not done yet:

hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/ha...

I drink almost 1 liter of that delicious beverage every day...

LearnAll profile image
LearnAll in reply toNorthcaptain

Good point..Northcaptain....just like people say PSA is not prostate cancer...I say..prostate cancer is not entire human body...we need to take care of entire body and not just the cancer cells.

Solid immune system, lowest inflammation and good general health..can destroy cancer cells...and this is what the body was doing well to cancer cells until we got diagnosed because cancer cells got upper hand to our immune system.

Tea is one of those good foods which has antioxidants, anti inflammatory and phenolic compounds/tannins , which empower body to thwart growth of cancer cells.

Taking Mega Green Tea Extract supplement from Life Extension. Hope it helps and not hurts.

I like silver needle white tea by Rishi. White and green tea have similar EGCG, etc... They are all from the same plant (camellia sinensis), just picked at different times, altitudes, environments... and processed (fermentation) slightly differently. I drink the tea because I like it, but in order to get the clinical quantities of polyphenols/catechins used in PCa studies I seriously doubt I could chug enough tea all day. I also take a green tea capsule supplement. The dandelion root tea is good for the liver and immunity. Moringa and holy basil tea also recommended, so I try to work those in for variety, but under no illusion that they really make any difference. Finally, I switch to coffee after lunch just because I love coffee and rationalize the possible anti-cancer benefits when I get the second or third cup. Yes, I am making frequent trips to the bathroom by late afternoon 😬.

There was a nut job in my support group who believed that Juicing and prayer was the cancer cure. He died.

The lady who wrote the book about juicing was debunked as a fraud because somebody was able to pry her medical records and she used radiation to treat her breast cancer before starting her juicing book fraud. No mention in her book about treatments prior to juicing, just before and after tumor photos. I wonder how many other people fell for this fraud, bought her book, and died.

Hey CarrotBoy!

Some men take Pomi-T which has green tea as an ingredient. A non profit group funded a study and Dr. Greger has a YouTube vid on it. A urologist also has a formulation made with the four ingredients and sells it from his office. I prefer to choose my supps. I like to know what, where sourced, quality rep and the amounts of what I take. I try to avoid proprietary blends.

If you watch the video take note of the fact that large amounts of each ingredient did little but much smaller amounts of the ingredients combined were quite effective. Moderation?

I know how stressful it can be. Everyone on HU does--who would want this?

I would strongly suggest that you find a good Dr. of naturopathy and have a meeting discussing what supplements, the amounts and frequency that you take them to assess your supp program--and diet. I had my sups and diet reviewed by a Dr. of naturaopathy, a doctor that works in studies that was between studies--and grants and my special IV, vitamin C infusion Doc that also did heavy metals testing and chelation therapy for me. He picked up on something the others missed or didn't know about. It wouldn't hurt a normal person, it would be good--but the supp may fuel prostate cancer. One should get enough in their diet.

DO NOT drop care with your conventional doctors but use the natural angle as a complementary edge.

Please DO NOT listen to those who are telling you there's no alternative/natural treatments that are effective. They've simply got their heads in the ground (or up something else) and refuse to acknowledge truth. Several posts above are shocking, especially the one mocking PRAYER. Another says in the hundreds of posts he's ever read he's never seen a case where an alternative protocol was successful. Well I am one, and there are MANY many others!

I've made several posts here of my successes. I have posted of how I was told nearly 8 years ago I have months to live unless I immediately went on hormones, had my prostate removed followed by weeks of radiation and possible chemo. I never had any of that and not only am I alive, but my prostate is fully intact and functioning fine. How closed minded is it to believe so deeply that radiation, surgery and hormones/chemo are the ONLY treatment for prostate cancer? Prostate cancer is a HUGE business, but I'm not going into that.

I have medical records that show how I reversed stage 4 with mets to shoulder, ribs, neck and spine with alternative protocols. The cancer is now fully contained in the prostate and last scans (two weeks ago) show those lesions shrinking.

I was directed to what I've done over the years by deep fervent Prayer. You also must believe in yourself and in the protocols because attitude is just as important as any protocol. Mind, Body and Spirit. What I'll mention to you right now is Fenbendazole. Research it and research Joe Tippens and watch his miraculous story using it. He created a Facebook page sharing his success and that has mushroomed into where you can read HUNDREDS of success stories of total cures of all sorts of cancers by people using it on just that page. But this is just one of a plethora of natural/alternative protocols.

When your doctor tells you you only have the standard options of gland removal, radiation and hormones, he's simply exhausting the extent of his knowledge. Believe me, very few doctors look outside the box. They only do and believe what they've been taught.

After nearly 8 years of doctors ridiculing me and trashing alternative treatments (despite my results) I found an oncologist last year at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Dr, Julio-Pow-Sang, MD. He is the Chair of the Department of Genitourinary Oncology and he was astounded by my results on Fenbendazole and DMSO. He is the ONLY doctor I've met with over the past nearly 8 years that didn't scoff, ridicule, criticize alternative treatments like some of the guys on this forum do. After seeing my last scan results he actually pulled a stool up and looked me in the eyes and said "Mr Frank, these results are remarkable. Let me tell you something, we don't know everything there is to know about this disease, in fact as a whole, we know very little, I am excited with these results. You just keep going".

Keep in mind that every one of the standard treatments that conventional medicine will offer you will change your life forever. Permanent, irreversible undesirable side effects, especially hormone therapy. I've read more than one post on this forum where guys have stated that they don't know if being on Lupron with it's side effects is actually better than death itself. Look those up. I'm not totally trashing these treatments because there are situations where they are an only option, but not for a Gleason 7 right now. Feel free to contact me direct and I can help you much more. But in the meantime, ask God to guide you to where you need to be.

Finally, an answer to your original question, I have gotten incredible results from Small Flower Willow Herb tea. Find it on Amazon and read the actual reviews of how it takes down the inflammation of the prostate and bladder, keeping in mind that a PSA reading in a man who still has his prostate is in direct correlation with the size of the prostate and does not mean the cancer is necessarily growing. It means the prostate is growing and that could be for other reasons. Dr. Pow Sang told me he's seen patients with triple digit PSA readings with very low grade cancers.

Believe in yourself, do your own research, find a doctor who is EDUCATED (that'll be the toughest part) and ask God for guidance.

Check out the angiogenesis foundation for a source of foods that are known for DNA repair, Microbiome Health, Antiangiogenesis, Cell regeneration, and boosting Immunity all supported by some form of research and compiled by a Harvard educated Dr. Will they cure, I do not believe so. My choice was conventional treatments and to eat these and as many other foods as I can find and along with regular excercise and addressing mind/body health make my body the strongest cancer fighter it can be. I have chosen to do this in place of supplements unless a blood test can confirm a deficiency (i.e. Vit D) The teas on their list , chamomile, black, green (I drink white which is less processed than green). I am reading a book mentioned on this forum, Anti Cancer A new way of life from another Dr that backs up this info. As there are no known side effects from a wide variety of good food I see no downside to it.

Greetings Y'all,

Nutritional discussions always bring out interesting opinions. Everyone eats, so everyone has an opinion. About five years ago, I started relying upon nutritionfacts.org for questions about food and health. Here's one listing about what Dr. Michael Greger has presented about green tea and prostate cancer.

nutritionfacts.org/2020/01/...

What I like about nutritionfacts.org is that you can dive deep into the resource materials and read the underlying journal arguments without a lot of trouble. When we transitioned to a plant based diet, we received the usual eye rolling from our friends. But after I sent them copies of Greger's bestseller HOW NOT TO DIE and they actually picked it up and read the parts that pertained to their medical conditions, a few of our friends began eating a plant based diet too. Only a few made the change, but it has been interesting to watch their health improve. Did it cure their cancers? Probably not, but their QOL improved. Turning one's back on animal protein and fats is as difficult or possibly more difficult than quitting smoking. Fat is as addictive as nicotine and possible more so.

I stopped buying copies of Gerger's book and giving it away, but as an effort in full disclosure, I contribute to his nutritionfacts.org non-profit organization each month. I owe him something for helping us improve our lives.

fluffyfur profile image
fluffyfur in reply toragnar2020

Excellent. Thank you.

Ragnar2020 -

I agree that diet change is crucial. As you say, will it "cure" cancer, likely not. But neither will conventional treatments if you factor in the exchange for "cure" vs Quality of Life"....in such cases I run from the cure.

I focus on keeping control over the cancer I have (notice I don't say "my cancer") not having it control me. I recognize I will likely have prostate cancer for the rest of my life, just like every other man on this forum. But the key is making the treatment decisions that preserve as much (or all) QOL as possible.

Will everyone who goes natural/alternative have results like me? Perhaps not. But I truly believe most will. But regardless, why not start there and see how long you can arrest the progression of the cancer as well as preserve that QOL before being hastily led into radical treatments by uninformed, close-minded knife happy doctors that will result in absolute and likely regrettable change of QOL forever.....
