Waiting for a cervical MRI + bone density measurement, my husband is having occipital pain since a month. It got better, but is still there.
PSA 60, ALP in normal range (bone AP as well), calcium normal range, last PSMA 6 months ago showed nothing new (2 lymph nodes involvement, seminal invasion, possible little bone mets not growing at all, so maybe not mets).
If the scans show no anatomical identifiable cause then one possibility is occipital neuralgia. Episodic severe shooting or lightning- like pain of an unpredictable nature. It is thought to be a variant of trigeminal neuralgia. Bursts of un-modulated activity in sensory cranial nerves. Can be helped by certain anti-seizure drugs and others but is unpredictable in its course. Often goes away with time. My wife had this over a few years and is now apparently resolved.
Very challenging and frustrating to deal with. My sympathies. See a neurologist if the scans do not reveal another cause.
Yes I have had occipital pain which radiated from the suboccipital region. MRI of the Cervical spine was negative for metastatic disease revealing minor arthritic changes. I pray that is the findings for your husband. Some simple postural corrective exercises cured the symptoms. MateoBeach spoke eloquently to a rarer and more severe etiology of occipital pain. Best wishes.
