My 1st Lupron shot is working!

I got my 1st Lupron shot on 2/4/2020, yesterday my PSA came back as <0.1 (it was 0.4) So from what I've read, it will remain effective for about 18 months. Then its on to something else. I'm done with worrying. Enjoying life is what it's all about. :)

Thanks to everyone in this forum for your knowledge and advise.

Hi 5, glad you hear about your good lab results. Are you also on an AR inhibitor? Adding Abiraterone or another inhibitor would be a big improvement in your expected outcome.

I have been getting pumped full of Lupron for five years and counting.

Each Lupron shot is either 1 month, 3 mos., 4mos or 6 mos.

If you have distant metastases, you never go off of it (unless you switch to Firmagon or have an orchiectomy). It always will keep your testosterone levels down, which will become even more important after you become castration resistant. Combining Lupron with another therapy extends survival in men with distant metastases.

If you don't have distant metastases, you may be using Lupron adjuvant to radiation therapy, and it can be used for a limited amount of time, hoping for a cure.

Allen: Are there any studies comparing the effectiveness of getting a one month Lupron shot vs. a 3 month shot?

Tks

It's just a matter of your convenience.

Hello 5_plus_4 (a Gleason score I presume).

I think your attitude is excellent. I'm also hoping that you'll get more than 18 months from the Lupron injections. It's my understanding that there is a correlation between the decline of PSA due to ADT and the length of the effectiveness of the treatment. Men who get very low PSA numbers, and get them quickly after treatment, are highly sensitive to the treatment and may benefit for longer than average periods. Hopefully, that will apply to follow on treatments as well.

If they're not doing it now, I'd ask your oncologist to also test your testosterone level when he does the PSA test. With your low PSA you've probably also got a low testosterone but it's useful to know if your T level is not as low as you expected. If so, a low dose of Casodex or some other treatment might be added.

Best of luck.

Alan

With luck you should get more than 2 years on Lupron before moving to the next step.

I've just started my 7th year on Lupron (every 4 months). Lowest PSA got was 0.06. In 6 years it has risen to .25. I had 40 treatments of external beam radiation 3 years before starting Lupron. Gleason was 4 and 3 with 10 of 12 samples cancerous.

7 years of success on LUPRON! Starting year 7 I mean. I had 42 IMRT rad zaps way back in 2005. Wish they the radiation oncologist would have been more accurate. But that was 2005 technology.

Lupron 7 years Sandy852! That a long life time hormone free or T levels NIL. What is your Testosterone level now?

Hi 5, not sure if this applies to your specific situation but the LATITUDE study showed that Abiraterone Acetate with Prednisone and ADT had 33 months to PSA progression, and for ADT alone it was 7 months to PSA progression.

I don' know but probably should. Haven't had it tested recently but will get it added when I get my next PSA test.

Great news. Don’t limit it to 18 months. Some have been on it for 12 yrs or more. That might not sound so great to you right now . But you can get many years on Lupron with an undetectable PSA..Thanks for sharing what I feel is great news. Hang in there baby.. Lime my doc told me” you could be doing this for a long time” . 🥳
