I see a lot of posts talking about using diet supplements, herbal additives, garlic, curcumin etc...
I'm just wondering...are there recommendations on what I should be adding to my diet and what I should exclude to bolster my fight with this beast?
I'm on Zytiga at the moment. I also do Zoladex every 3 months & I do a Zometa drip once monthly for bone treatment...Was looking for advice on anything I can supplement my meals with (herbal or otherwise) to keep the PSA in check. Thanks!

There is no supplement or dietary intervention that has been definitively proven to help. But you may not require definitive proof. There is a lot to be said for the feeling of control it gives you to take something that you believe might help. If you decide to take something, let your doctor know. There may be interactions with other drugs you are taking. Avoid supplementing calcium (or any other vitamins or minerals) unless your levels are low. Avoid Vitamin E. Avoid antioxidants, especially if you are having any kind of radiation (including radiopharmaceuticals). I think sulforaphane looks good so far except if you are having radiation.
You mentioned avoiding Vitamin E - being Indians, our staple vegetarian meal/curry is cooked in groundnut oil. Also, since broccoli seems to be beneficial for Pca, we tend to give him broccoli almond soup about thrice a week- should we switch to some other oil? maybe sunflower? and stop his consumption of almonds all-together? I had read contradictory opinions on vitamin E usage. Also, whats your opinion on usage of dairy? and sugar/honey?
No worries with foods. It is only supplements - pills with 400 iu of d-alpha-tocopherol that was implicated.
Dairy: This was from a prospective study (PLCO) among 49,472 men with follow-up of 11 years. They filled out food diaries at the start. "Total dairy product consumption was not statistically significantly associated with risk of any prostate cancer or stratified by disease severity. "
Sugar/honey: Cancer will use any nutrient available. Prostate cancer seems to prefer fatty acids to sugars, at least at first. There's no good evidence that decreasing intake helps. There may be other reasons to decrease intake of refined sugars, though.
I think you are looking for something to help you fight prostate cancer and I have some thoughts....While TA states there is no definitive proof--a randomized double blind study, there is enough proof that the following are in testing--Curcumin is in a phase 3:
I do not endorse supplements as a replacement for SOC...As you can see, there is clearly an interest in potential benefits of supplements in prostate cancer from NCI. TA mentioned sulforophane and I take Broccomax, with my daily dose of Broccoli sprouts that I grow myself...Curcumin is something I also take and you can see some information on that from a Nalakrats post on Curcumin a few months ago--214 responses. TA states that curcumin may effect PSA values--I have not seen that in a randomized double blind study. After the Curcumin article, a friend of mine stopped curcumin 4 days in advance of testing and the results were the same--no change... I also take Vitamin D which I started after being on Lupron and it seemed to help my "brainfog". There is some evidence that Vit D deficiency influences/ causes dementia....
When it comes to diet and exercise, I am on a modified Keto diet and I exercise regularly--4-5x a week--walk/jog and lift weights for strength and bone strength. I was obese and lost 55# so far...have about another 13# to go...
We are all on this hell ship, and you must decide what supplements may be of benefit...In time, we will have trial results... I hope this response sheds some additional light on supplements and things you can do to fight prostate cancer...All the best....
My advice is always keep up your vitamin D3 level. A vegetarian diet. Stay away from domestic animal products. They are full of hormones to make them grow bigger, fatter and faster. Those hormones cannot be good for Pca. I drink a lot of green tea, not US national brands. I get my green tea from Amazon. Yamamotoyama which is Japanese sencha green.
I have always considered supplements the same as other conventional medicines. Prostate cancer finds a way around supplements also. So when my PSA rises I have changed supplements through the years. If you would like a list send me a chat message.
Dylan Thomas? Could not agree more. Belief ... gathering information sufficient to individual understanding. Knowing ... knowing the enigma wrapped in a mystery (APC) is essential ... but impossible. A world understanding (finite stuff), cannot reveal life-infinite. Two years ago my oncology team agreed ... had my 4th stage on first exam dx been realized 20 yrs ago they would have sent me on the twilighting-life world cruise.
Gratitude gents and acceptance with a will to learn and apply the “good stuff”.
Respect the beast: learn, believe, then know ... that you must kick it’s ass big time.
