Has anyone ever had the oncologist suggest that they take your nuts and put fake ones in since 90 percent of hormone comes from them.

Yes- it's called an orchiectomy. It makes sense if you are on continuous ADT for life.

My Urologist, mentions it every time I see him. Costs less than a thousand bucks here in Mexico and that includes the fake nuts!

Yes, as soon as it was confirmed that I was stage 4 with lymph node involvement. This is particularly done on younger men.

🤪 stay on lupron long enough and your nuts will be gone by themselves. 🤪🤪😢😢😢

Yes, my husband had an orchiectomy but did not get the replacements. He joked with the oncologist that he would only get them if they came in Green and Gold (Green Bay Packer colors)!

What was his prognosis before the surgery and did he try ADT treatments and why take that route , dies he have other side effects ?

MeliaQuinn profile image
MeliaQuinn in reply toMuffin2019

He was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer with numerous bone Mets and lymph node involvement. Lupron has its own side effects that he wasn’t willing to put up with long term such as increased bone fractures, thrombosis, etc. Side effects of orchiectomy include hot flashes and loss of sexual desire. That happens with Lupron as well.

How is his PSA now, just trying to get options in case I run into more problems down the road .

MeliaQuinn profile image
MeliaQuinn in reply toMuffin2019

Unfortunately, his PSA is back up to 115. He had a good year with Zytiga (diagnosed in May of 2017) but then his PSA began to rise (he became castrate resistant, meaning that even though his testosterone was low the cancer figured out how to change and keep growing). He began chemo (Docetaxel) last fall every 3 weeks for a course of 8 cycles/infusions. After 2 months his PSA began to rise again which brings us to the present. He has also had some radiation. We began looking at clinical trials only to find out after 1.5 months that he was disqualified for the ProStar due to the order of his previous treatments. He was in a lot of pain so last week he did another chemo infusion. We will not know for another two weeks whether it is working or not (but he is feeling better probably due to the dexamethasone and chemo) but in the meantime we are researching other clinical trials and trying to stay a step ahead of this alien!

Thank goodness he's not a NY Giant fan.... can you imagine him going around saying he's got blue balls?

Wow, he is much further than I am, glad I had chemo from the start with the lupon, how old is he, that makes a difference in treatment I would think. Hang in there and keep fighting. Good luck.

He is 55, diagnosed at 53 with a PSA of 154. How old are you and how long have you been in this battle?

I am almost 68, diagnosed In February of 2018 with a psa of 156, Gleason 9 and 10 with lesions on the spine in 4 spots, end of one rib and couple of pelvic spots. I immediately started chemo with dox, 6 treatments, psa dropped to .4 at the end. The last scan showed no activity in the encasplated spinal ones and rib, ghe pelvic ones were gone, prostate was dead and any soft tissue was normal. Since starting lupron I gave gained 21 pounds which I could use, readings have been around .6 but went up to 1.8 at last test but I added a herb called olive leaf extract. Upon further research it does help blood pressure as the lupron raises it but it contains a compound that raises testrrone, I stopped it. I dud not get that many hot flashes when I was taking the herb , now I am averaging between 7 and 10 daily after last shot. I eat red meat only a few times a month, eat plenty of vegs and fruit, my protein comes from chicken, fish and turkey. I just got s book called anticancer by a doctor who beat brain cancer twice, went through a year of chemo and us still alive. Cancer. I walk 3000 steps a day more or less and still work part time, cancer runs in the family now, brother is doing 13 rounds of chemo after a remission of 5 years and my sister passed this april of lung cancer (a non smoker, ate healthy ). My yearly scans is in 2 weeks so will see what happens along with a psa check. This site is full of good information.

The book is called anti cancer, A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD, it gives eating tips I found very useful and other things, it is on amazon and costs around 17.00 new plus shipping. I had my 5 minutes of crying while hugging my cat but then realized their were treatments and so much to live for (my 5 cats, work, club I am active in, my closest friend who has shared my life and house for 20 years along with my friends. A former boss and the husband of another worker also was diagnosed at the same time, they had the prostate removed but had to do radiation therapy. This past year another worker gad to treat thyroid cancer and the brother of another worker had to treat a brain tumor, they both made it. Going in for carpal tunnel surgery on both hands in July if all goes well. Since going semi retirementioned ny social calender had had more doctor appoint men's than ever, so much for a golden retirement.

Wow! Sounds like you have seen it all!! I try to understand it, cancer, but it still leaves me bewildered! Our oncologist says that it is part of us and has been for perhaps as long as sapiens have been around, maybe longer? Is cancer a mechanism to remove us from the population for some common good? Why does it have the upper hand?

Muffin2019 profile image
Muffin2019 in reply toMeliaQuinn

The author of the book thinks that they are with us and grows when our immune system breaks down due to stress or other factors, interesting considering the age people are getting cancer and getting infusions.

Orchiectomy is the most effective ADT and the lowest cost..It's SOP in third world countries...It also avoids any drug side-effects. Oncologists receive MUCH better reimbursements for administering Lupron type drugs...Most don't even mention orchiectomy as an option...

Imho it’s nuts to lose ur nuts.... unless you have incurable PCa.

KJMinPhx profile image
KJMinPhx in reply toBreak60

Uhh, it is incurable any time it has spread outside the prostate. We can only stop it, not cure it.

in reply toKJMinPhx

Hope you are wrong. I’m sure you don’t know that in all instances. There are so many stages of this disease and there are people that the tumor has gotten out that have been cured. According to my drs. They’ve seen everything.

Muffin2019 in reply to

If it has spread then what have you got to lose, women gave a similiar thing to stop the hormones, they are sterol and cannot have kids. If you are older and no plan to have a family and sex is not that important then why not. Even on ADT the sex drive is gone and so is erecting in most cases with ghe side effects. Would be cheaper and may last longer that ADT, it is all about the money. I am surprised the insurance company's requiem this in some cases.

Break60 in reply toKJMinPhx

I don’t despite that fact but longevity varies considerably among us .

Had mine removed a couple of years ago and I don’t miss them at all. I would have had to take ADT for the rest of my life so why not. By the way lupron injections are a huge money maker for urologists.

My replacements are 18 Karat Solid Gold cue ball size... This way I can say to my wife "Now both of us are sitting on a gold mine".

As soon as I realized my diagnosis, I've told every specialist that I rather have the Orchiectomy. I'm way past wanting to preserve any sexuality and I only have Medicare to cover these treatments. I don't mean to bankrupt my family.

They all nod sagely and make copious notes in the computerized record system and yet here I am on Lupron. A 6-month shot.

Even without testicles there is a certain amount of testosterone produced, mostly from the adrenals. Years ago I was diagnosed with hyperaldosteronism from bi-lateral adrenal hyperplasia, so I suspect that orchiectomy will not deplete my testosterone completely, Therefore I would still have to be on some kind of ADT, right?

So it's possible that instead of cutting out unnecessary costs, I might be adding unnecessary costs.

Muffin2019 profile image
Muffin2019

They make money on the shots but still probably be on the shots, the only annoying thing is the hot flashes and constipation but still alive. The woman I work with part time says she hopes I have alot of them so she can turn down the a/c.

In third world it might be first line of defense. My specialist asked me to wait one year after dx to do so . On that day I ordered my own chop chop baby. Best thing since APC I ever did . They were shrunken and painfully castrated by then anyway . In the surgery pre op my surgeon my urologist told his cohorts preparing for surgeries ..” this guy doesn’t want to come see me every three months for his entire life “. They all seemed to conquer it a benifit . About the fake balls? The same surgeon said “ who’s going to see them anyway?” Personally se la ve , Addios juevos ! Not a shot since 9-16. Still on a pill form of adt . Follow your own thinking . There’s not a more personal choice for a man . I ll do almost anything to keep the beast away as long as possible . It will get us all in the end if something else doesn’t get us first . Sex and balls aren’t really important after a serious dx. Life itself is important . I liken it to that guy that chopped his own arm off to free himself from a boulder. . Don’t think I couldn’t have done that one . Orchiectomy was easy for me . Balls got me in nothing but trouble . Either way you’ll get in touch with your feminine side . Good luck . 🍀

Like your attitude and sense of humor, at my age sex after dx plus lupron is gone. A good dinner and a movie is a terrific date , spiritual sense is better.

in reply toMuffin2019

We are realist ..you’re on the right path . Sex is an after thought since dx. Good thing . Before dx I was literally possessed by it .. kind of a weight lifted of the shoulders . Yes , we can now focus on the spiritual aspect of life . That is the solution . Even when there is no medical solution . We can save our souls .. the flesh is weak ... looks like violets on the porch ... wish I had a fresh blueberry muffin in my hands now .. Take care buddy ..we do what we must. .. 🎢
