Hey Harley. I lost 60 lbs in just a few months by cutting all augers , processed foods, plant based diet . That was during imrt five years ago . I was fasting for 2 days per week also during Rt. I went from 233 muscle down yo 165 and gaunt. I went into remission soon after and now I’m

At a comfortable for me 190lbs. You won’t belIeve how cutting sugar can drop the weight. It worked for me . Good luck 13

Thanks. I am looking at HPLC routine that is similar to yours. I had great success with Adkins years ago and am considering that to start.

in reply toHarley13

I was a foodie , liked all of the deserts and such . Also cut all animal proteins completely those first two years . I now cheat on special occasions once in a while . I’m one that Thinks what we put in matterS. With pc we are slated for heart issues. Another reason to control diet . Also if you happen to be able to ride a Harley once in awhile that’s good for the spirit . You will feel 1000 % better once you reach your optimum weight. You can do it ...

The Harley days are over but that was my dogs name. I now ride ebikes and really ARE going to lose the weight. Thanks for the convo...

in reply toHarley13

I’m looking at an e-bike. Pretty cool?

I see a lot of them here and must confess I get a little ego boost when I pass one but I think they are awesome if the option is it or nothing. They make many types now and conversions of existing bikes exist as well. By friend modified his cargo bike now it does 35mph.

in reply totreedown

I saw some e cargo bikes. The way of the future?

Harley13 profile image
Harley13 in reply to

Ebikes are wave of the future. Go to electricbikereview.com/ and you will be amazed. There is a bike for every need. Look at Juiced, Sondors and Radpower to see the best bikes. You want one that has pedal assist and throttle.

I am building a carbon fiber recumbent ebike. I have built recumbent ebikes from mountain bikes in the past.

Harley is correct there are e bikes like electric motorcycles and ebikes that just assist you're pedaling. The latter will stop moving if you can't pedal. We had a lady on a local gravel ride that had one and she could not keep pedaling uphill so had to walk her 62 pound bike uphill for a couple miles. But she got better exercise that way at least.

in reply totreedown

aye ol pedal assist eh?😂

treedown profile image
treedown in reply to

Yep, a good source for getting out and about and some exercise. Clearly one would need to be careful to pick it up if not having kept up with biking. I think Kaliber has a sitting version of a e-bike or e-trike. I see many people of all ages around here commuting with them, getting farther out of town than they could with a regular bike for exercise. That being said hiking/walking is just as good. For weight loss it comes down to time spent doing any given activity. Clearly a 3 hour activity will burn more calories than a a 30 minute one so if nothing is keeping you down do whatever you choose for as long as you can. Weights serve another equally valuable option but one cannot replace the other. And then there's hard work like taking down tree's :)

in reply totreedown

I always thought that a recumbent on the streets are low and therefor hard to see . ? Good if one has a bad back . I got two eliptigos upon dx five years ago . Great cardio !

treedown profile image
treedown in reply to

Yes they are the ones I see around here have tall flexible poles with flags. Also this is a very bike friendly area. And they are good for people with bad backs, I am sure there are e-versions of those as well. They make e--bikes you would never know it was a e-bike becuase they look so much like regular bikes and hide the batters so effectively. Eliptico's like stationary trainer ? @ ? One for you one for the wife? We got some trikes a ways back but used them very little. They are like scooters with 3 wheels that can propel you if you can get action right. They are made for flat paved area's which we had little of at the time of purchase.

in reply totreedown

I was interested in recumbents, but my back got better after a surgery 15 yrs ago. The eliptigo is like a scooter that you stand up straight on and pedal ?? We do have a indoor stand to use them inside if we choose . We sold hers a few years back . Now just one .. anything to get the blood moving right? ✌️

Whimpy,

If you are in a situation calling for fast food, consider burger kings new Impossible burger. This is plant-based (no beef) and with salt-free fries makes for an acceptable lunch when pressed for time. You have to ask for “salt-free”. (I don’t work for Burger King.)

in reply toCalBear74

I’ve heard of it . But salt free fries? Yuk? Lots of catsup . Ketchup mmm

ITCandy profile image
ITCandy in reply to

1/3 liquid invert sugar is what makes ketchup taste so good. Best served with hot salty greasy fries.

Cujoe posted a study that suggested consuming salt and alcohol was better than consuming sugar.

Bummer, I don’t drink but I do like my ice cream and way more than two scoops.

in reply toITCandy

Cujoe is cool. I too like the ice cream a little too much. Wife limits me to non dairy. But once in a while . I remember as a teen I could eat a quart Easily.

I wish I had your self control but with four kids who eat normal food and daily desserts, it’s easier to just be one of them, although I’m probably the least mature of the gang.

Glad to see that you’re doing so well. Keep up the great work.

in reply toITCandy

Being one of the kids is in itself good for your soul brother. When in Rome?

Agree with plant-based diet dropping sugar, fried and processed foods and most of all portion control!

in reply toTrengle

It’s like the moms used to tell us “ eat your veggies”! Once you drop the bad stuff you won’t want to go back to it again . On occasion you can cheat . It is the day to day habits that count the most .. ✌️

I did a low-cal keto diet with some fasting and went from 195 to 155 in about three months (actually lost a little too much, too quick, but felt great). Went from a puffy skinny guy with a gut to a plain old skinny guy.

For something less extreme, try two things: 1) cut the carbs, especially the "whites" (white sugar, flour, rice, potato, milk, etc.) and, 2) do time-restricted eating where you take in all your calories in a 4-10 hour window that ends by 8pm, the shorter the better (I did 11am - 5pm for about a month).

Drinking lots of water, exercising before breakfast, and not eating late at night, have helped me manage to keep the Lupron belly in check. Main thing is to avoid spikes in insulin response from eating sugars and simple carbohydrates. Try to feel hungry at least part of every day-- you get used to it.

treedown profile image

I used an app to keep track of my calories. Excercised a lot and still do. Ultimately burned more calories than I consumed lost 45 pounds on Lupron and Zytiga.

Great job!

Have you looked at the chapter on diet in the ADT book?

depotdoug profile image

What where’s the ADT book? I’m new to hearing about that aid.

Wassersug profile image
Wassersug in reply todepotdoug

Chapter 4 in the book "Androgen Deprivation Therapy" (the 2018 edition) is on diet. The book is all evidence-based and formally endorsed the Canadian Urological Association. [Full disclosure—I am one of the many authors on book. But the chapter on diet was written by the top nutritionist for the British Columbia Cancer Agency, Cheri Van Patten.]

I have seen many men gain no weight on ADT and others loss the weight they had gained, However they all were very active in terms of physical exercise. Chapter 3 in the book is on exercise and it was written by Daniel Sata Mina, one of the three top experts in Canada on exercise and cancer.

I need to get that book ASAP!

From Amazon or online?

I’ll order it at lunch time today.

Is it readily available??

Let me know please.

P.S. I’m doing way to to many carbs and I know it. Darn it.

Get in touch. Thanks Doug

Thanks,

You and other on this list are, of course, weclome to contact me directly, if they have questions about managing the side effects of ADT. Best though to email me or direct message me, as I rarely am on the list and don't review all that is posted here.

Yes, I just read assimilated the praise section of Your Book. Androgen Deprivation Therapy 2nd edition. (electronic kindle edition) psychological changes and side effects and diet. What a great book for me to dive into.

I am not new to ADT. My 1st bout was 2008 -2013 and I thought that was the end of my cancer. Wrong. Now i'm researching everything and anything about my ADT and cancer advanced metastatic S4 treatments. Great info links for help too. Thanks, Depot

It's harder than I expected to avoid or lose the ADT belly fat. I've always been skinny. I'm still sort of skinny, but with a distinct spare tire around my middle. I eat small portions, avoid junk food like pizza and french fries, eat red meat once a week at most, and eat deserts and sweets very infrequently. But apparently this isn't enough.

Weight training three days a week has been my savior boys. About an hour and twenty minutes. Lots of reps to exhaustion on all muscle groups. Maybe 3 to 4 sets of twenty or more. Low weights but slow and to exhaustion. I gained muscle on adt which isn’t easy. Studies show Weight training burns calories for hours after workout as opposed to cardio.

reduce caloric intake and increase exercise...make sure you get the nutrients you need , better from food or a superfood than pills....just an idea....Blue Skies...

That is crazy talk. I want a program where I can eat pasta and ice cream and lose weight. Dang. Cutting calories and exercising more.

What has the world come to?😂

Cramlingtonboy profile image

It's the consolation chips and other evening snacks that are the danger for me. I weigh myself daily and if there's an increase for two days running, I cut back and try to exercise more. So far so good but even though my weight has stayed within 5-10 lbs, like Gearhead, the pre-ADT, barely-noticeable, evenly-distributed fat that I once carried has migrated to my midriff.

Ketogenic. And the weight just melts away. 188 to 145 in 6 months. Effortlessly.

Get on a keto diet asap ! It’ll fix it and a host of other issues. Chk out the talks ofDr Paul Mason and Prof. Tim Noakes on You Tube, I’m on ADT with Zytiga, Zoladex and Prednisone, dx since 2015 with Gls 9/10 and Mets to bone, but things are good for now, PSA undetectable, however, putting on the pounds and constant fatigue, in Jan of ‘20, went on Keto and lost 32lbs, energy levels are normal, reversed my T2 diabetes.

Thanks for input. After a lot of research I am now on Adkins Level 20 diet. I lost significant weight years ago on the original Adkins diet and know the foods etc. I am also doing 8-16 fasting for a couple weeks to get things started. Got to take advantage of 0 PSA after three years of Lupron/Eligard.

Probably the best discussion of this problem - and it is a side effect of ADT, and has a name, sarcopenia. youtu.be/TGEAiU5SnCU
