"The treatment of cancer using light, called Photodynamic therapy, is based on chemical compounds called photosensitizers, which can be switched on by light to produce oxidising species, able to kill cancer cells. Clinicians can activate these compounds selectively where the tumour is (using optical fibres) thus killing cancer cells and leaving healthy cells intact."

The good thing about Photodynamic therapy (TOOKAD and the like) is-- it can be done over and over till they kill it all -- whether it mutates or not -- and only effects the cancer cells and a very few surrounding the treatment area.
Twelve years ago I went to London's University College Hospital to participate in a clinical trial of photo dynamic therapy ( Tookad), run by Mark Emberton. Unfortunately, my lesions were within 5 mm of a sphincter, thus I did not make the cut for trial inclusion.
There was a hospital in Toronto also doing trials back then. As usual, US facilities seem to be 8 -10 years behind when it comes to attempting some novel approach.
