Hello everyone,

Does anyone know how I can help my father gain weight? He has been taking chemotherapy and has lost a lot of weight. He is eating healthy meals and snacking throughout the day but he went from 165 to 145

Have you tried cannabis?

Why would Cannabis help? CBD Hemp is nothing more than snake oil. It's got to have THC to even think about working.

It’s a combination of cbd and thc that my father is taking and it has worked for his pain

You're lucky to live someplace where you can buy it Texas it's illegal.

My father is lucky especially since norcos were prescribed and they were going to prescribe him something stronger because it was not helping his pain. Medical marijuana has made wonders on maintaining his pains as well as giving him a good appetite

The VA will turn you into a drug addict with opiods but will not prescribe Medical marijuana for pain.

Glad your father is getting the relief from his pain.

in reply to conagher

I disagree. THC is good for one or two things but CBD Hemp, a type of industrial hemp, is much cheaper and much more effective, IMO, not to mention safer, and legal in all 50.

I used CBD Hemp from 3 different major companies in Colorado for over 5 years. Never had any relief to pain or any reduction in PCa.

As long as you believe the placebo works great.

in reply to conagher

I don't believe I ever mentioned using CBD for either pain relief nor to reduce PCa, possibly because I don't, so I am not sure what you mean by placebo. To be precise, I believe the original subject concerned appetite and weight management. I was merely pointing out that one can achieve those goals using something that is cheaper and safer than mm and legal everywhere in the US. If people want to spend more money, that's their prerogative.

I always stand to be corrected. I forgot to add appetite please forgive me for this unfortunate mistake.

As for as the placibo doing CBD hemp for anything is the same results as eating at an M&M. As for as being cheaper than THC it is you might check the price on a 120ml 1000mg bottle of hemp. Try Bluebird Batonical in Colorado.

I did post to the original poster what Has worked for me. 119lbs to 173 lbs.

in reply to conagher

I can get trim for $100/lb and use it to infuse in coconut oil. Of course, the good flower for smoking or vaporizing can run up to $70/oz, but that’s very high quality. Still cheaper than mm and more to the point available to anywhere in the USA. Since recreational passed here in MI over 100 dispensaries have closed and the mom & pop caregivers are pushed out entirely, as they can no longer sell overage. So, cannabis is legal in MI, but it is harder and harder to get, soon basically impossible to legally acquire any. And it is illegal to grow hemp, which is harmless and not psychoactive.

You won't buy what you are talking about in Texas illegal

in reply to conagher

txcann.com/hemp-bill-passes... They came up with it because it was legal to buy hemp in TX, you just couldn't grow it. You can order hemp flower, trim, nugs, kief, etc, all legally and have it shipped to TX if you like. I would never suggest to people they break the law.

Hello,

Yes he is currently taking cannabis and has a good appetite but we have changed his diet. He’s eating all organic and eating only chicken or fish. He is not eating food that are high on calories

tom67inMA in reply to Mrsram

Chemo or radiation can affect the cells in the intestine that absorb food, so eating more just means more food passes through without being absorbed. Calorie needs are also higher during treatment. It may not be the best time to change to a healthy diet. I tried to eat healthy and lost 10 lbs.

I added back in some "naughty" foods including ice cream and my weight has been stable, my PSA continues to drop, and generally I'm feeling better with three cycles still to go. So much for lots of raw veggies :-)

Eating healthy after recovering from chemo is important. During chemo, just eat!

Another reason why we changed his diet is because he had sugar levels rising to the 600’s. But okay it makes sense

Yikes! That does complicate things a bit. Maybe leave the skin on his chicken?

Is he on metformin? That's also supposed to help fight the cancer in addition to lowering blood sugar.

Mrsram profile image
Mrsram in reply to tom67inMA

Yes over 2000 mg but we seem to have controlled it and now he is taking 1700mg. Wow I didn’t know that it helps fight cancer

Apparently so, according to youtube.com/watch?v=Kg9RBFw...

Also mentioned is that a side effect is weight loss, which is good for most men during hormone treatment, not so good for your dad during chemo.

Just watched tom67inMA metformin video. He may have hit the nail on the head? Metformin side effect? All these side effects are so complicated. I would pull my hair out if I had any. Best of luck.

Since he is taking medical marijuana it has not affected his eating surprisingly he has a very good appetite and is always hungry . He consumes 3 large meals a day and snacks in between. But he still continues to drop weight. My thoughts are he needs high calories in his diet

I weighted 119 during chemo. VA had me on 4 cans of Ensure a day. I gained up to and maintaining 173. I had throat cancer so eating was very difficult.

He has been drinking ensure once a day but since you mentioned 4 times a day we will try that thank you

Perhaps a protein drink used by bodybuilders to bulk would be helpful. They are better now but the type of drinks such as your dad has been drinking were void of any real nutrition at one time, refined sugar and so on. I was shocked to see what was in the one my father in-law was drinking but that was the mid 90's. Brewers yeast has the complete amino acid profile as well many other important nutrients. A powerful blender can be your friend. Add some chia, flax, sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Maybe some Maximum Vibrance, the brewers yeast, ( Solgars is a good brand), and blueberries. If he isn't vegan some raw or organic honey. Finish with the bodybuilder's weight gain powder of your choice.

A snack such as an apple, eat the skin and seeds, and dates or figs which have high amounts of phytochemicals and natural sugars. Something about figs--

Phytochemicals in figs

Fig fruits contain the phytochemical “benzaldehyde”, which the Japanese were able to identify as an active ingredient found through the extraction of its juice, and is shown to have cancer-fighting capabilities.

Try a good quality meal shake and add in nut butter, avocado, other high calorie yet nutritious foods. I'd give it to him in addition to his meals. Not just a "protein shake" ... one with good amt of calories and stay away from ones with artificial sweeteners etc.

I managed to force down two ensure drinks. Threw the others away. I'm real picky. If it's not related to junk food, I am very suspicious. I was going to say let him eat what he used to, what he wants, but others have so noted. Also know nothing about sugar issue. I drink a gallon of Pepsi per day. Not recommended for pc patients. But I'm thinking outside the box. But if "He consumes 3 large meals a day and snacks in between" and is still losing weight sounds like only a doctor is going to be able to help you. Sweating it out through hot flashes or excessive urination? Is he staying hydrated? I understand that lots of water is good, but I have no personal knowledge of that. Best of wishes.

I was just diagnosed a month ago and starting treatment. Getting medical marijuana card NOW so I don't have to deal with it when I really need it, and I'm 33 years sober. I know it will help down the road. If your state allows you should get asap, if not, you'd be surprised how many of your friends/neighbors can get you some. Good luck!

Sucking on ice chips during an infusion of Chemo has been reported to allow for improved ability to taste foods. Also ice down his feet, fingers, and scalp. That should help avoid other issues. Good luck!!! Kick the devil out to the street!

I must be the only guy that gained weight during six months of chemo. 80 pounds in all. And, I had to cut out all milk products including ice cream, during the trial. However, I attribute the weight gain to the 30 mg of Prednisone daily and Lupron. I ate normal meals totaling about 3000 calories a day. Sure the food tasted metallic, but I got use to it. A balanced diet is needed to maintain body strength. Body strength is necessary in fighting cancer with Chemotherapy. Good luck.

Vanilla malteds.... 3 x a day followed by chocolate chip ice cream (two scoops), then buy him larger size trousers and a new belt.

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.
