Piper going strong

EricE had his robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy on April 12, 2018, in Seattle, Washington by Dr. Porter. He has recovered nicely except for the impotence. We are working on ways around that. The oncologist and surgeon's offices both recommended a small dosage of Sildenafil or Cialis for blood flow; however, the surgeon said that since these work on nerves and the nerves were resected with the surgery, the meds are a waste of money.

Eric has been working with a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic floor incontinence. What a world of difference! If you are still having incontinence problems go find a specialist. They are worth it. I should know, I am a physical therapist but do not specialize in incontinence and have learned a lot from her. Who knew? There are many more exercises beyond Kegel and most people do not do the Kegel exercises correctly anyway.

Eric achieved a long-standing goal today of playing his bagpipes in a festival. His surgeon would not let him play for 8 weeks and when he plays he still has some incontinence.

He helped lead the Korean War Veterans in the Joyce (WA) Daze Blackberry Festival Parade. I have tried to attach a photo or a video and neither of them will attach. So you will have to trust me when I say...it was spectacular!

Its been about 110/115 days since Eric underwent RRP.

How bad is the incontinence right now ? How long further is he

expected to have these incontinence problems ?

Good to know Eric has recovered nicely overall. All the very best.

Hi mjBach, This video shows the exercises that are learning to control the deepest hip rotator muscles rather than the pelvic floor. There is a neurological connection between the pelvic floor when the feet are connected, apparently. You can look up the video up roll for control exercises: youtube.com/watch?v=kSMt-Rh... Eric went from using 7 pads and two briefs a day to 1 of each within a few weeks. It has been remarkable. It makes me really sad that every man who has prostate surgery are not automatically referred for this service. We have a LONG way to go to improve health care for our patients! I hope your husband can see very good improvements with these exercises.

Hi whatsinaname, Eric's incontinence is worst when he is bagpiping. Other than that it occurs when he lifts or does something physical. He is now using one pad and one brief per day. The surgeon really poo-pooed the physical therapy, which made us both quite sad. He seemed to think that the incontinence would get better on its own eventually but could likely take up to a year. Eric is continuing his exercises and finding them to be helpful. I anticipate to see improvements continuing. Thanks so much for your good wishes.

I SALUTE HIM.

Good Luck and Good Health.

My husband quickly recovered from incontinence but never the other even with little blue pills and apparatus after his LRP (17 years ago). Learned to live without it.

Are you or Eric willing to share the exercises he is learning with us here?

Out of the blue my husband recently became daytime leaker and specialist told him to learn to live with it as part of scar tissue and aging. Doc gave him a clamp.
