I am due to have an anterior total hip replacement on June 19th I will visit my oncologist for my 6 monthly Eligard injection on June 14th. Does anyone know if there is a problem with this? I was told that I should not have any major dental treatment before a hip replacement when I rang today about a broken tooth because an infection from the tooth could travel to the hip bone. Also, even though my recent bone density scan showed that I have osteopenia rather than osteoporosis, I wonder what impact ADT has on teeth as mine seem to have become more brittle.

ADT and hip replacement
The link between dental infections and artificial joints seems to have been controversial for several years. My hip was replaced 14 years ago and I just had my biennial checkup with the surgeon, so I asked if the antibiotic prophylaxis for dental work was still necessary. His response was "we don't really know, but if you can tolerate the single dose of antibiotic do it", implying that the single treatment will prevent possible problems but have no lasting effect.
If you have an active dental infection I would want to have it repaired and the infection cured before having any orthopaedic surgery -- why tempt the risk?
I had a knee replacement two years into ADT treatment with no complications after 4 and a half years. After the surgery you should be taking antibiotics prior to each dental check up even if it is just a cleaning.
I read warnings that you should not be on bone building meds like xgeva or fosamax with major dental treatment. Repair of broken tooth may not be major dental work as long as they dont extract the tooth, but check with your doctor.
