Hip Replacement

Unfortunately, the ball of my right hip has been hit with a large amount of bone mets. It is causing me a lot of pain when I walk or stand. My onc. is worried about fractures and had me see an orthopedic doc who specializes in bone diseases. Her recommendation is a partial hip replacement. Still waiting to see what radiologist says. Has anyone had any experience in this type of treatment?

Partial hip replacement replaces the ball of the hip joint. It does not replace the socket. If the ball of the hip is affected by metastases and is making walking very painful, it seems to me a very reasonable treatment for your problem.

I had my (full) hip replaced 3 weeks ago. I'm 72 years of age. Rehab is no fun, but I'm back to walking almost normally. I'm looking forward to the future.

Thank you so much

Did you have it replaced because of the mets in the bone?

hSS is a fine place to get your hip replaced. Also, Did you have DEXA scan for baseline numbers?

When I was told last year that I had a bone met in my hip (inferior iliac spine) I asked my MO…why don’t I have a hip replacement? He said it wasn’t that easy. I believe what he meant is that removing the cancer by removing the bone in all likelihood doesn’t mean it won’t pop up somewhere else. I’d still feel better if they’d surgically remove the area with the cancer but maybe that isn’t SOC.
