Can anyone recommend a brand of sulforaphane that is cold processed and high in myrosinase ?
Thank you.
Can anyone recommend a brand of sulforaphane that is cold processed and high in myrosinase ?
Thank you.
I take Broccomax by Jarrow. It's extracted with supercritical CO2, I believe that would qualify as cold processed. The process preserves myrosinase, but I don't know how much is in each capsule.
Bill I take Jarrow broccomax. It is important to eat a few florets of raw broccolli with this, though I can not remember the reason
Dan,
Skip the raw broccoli. See my response to Bill.
With products without myrosinase, a spoonful of raw horseradish is a better alternative to the florets.

Would raw broccoli sprouts be a good substitute for the capsules.
You would have to eat quite a lot of raw broccoli sprouts, grown the right way and harvested at the right time. Unless you have a grower nearby that you trust, I think you would need to grow them yourself to get the benefits. Here's what Dr. Axe has to say:
"The exact quantity of glucoraphanin depends on the date picked (three days seems to be the ultimate sweet spot) and how the sprouts are prepared (raw is best — cooking eliminates a lot of the myrosinase). To most effectively take advantage of these compounds, thoroughly chew your sprouts. (3)
"Still with me? Let’s simplify it for the remainder of this article. Like most researchers, I’ll simply refer to this incredible compound as sulforaphane (as opposed to glucosinolate-derived sulforaphane or myrosinase-accompanied glucoraphanin)."
On the other hand, many herbalists argue that the concentration process used in most supplements deprives the patient of synergistic benefits that come from eating the plant or herb. So it could be that while it would take a lot of sprouts to equal the dose in the Jarrow capsules (who claim they do preserve the myrosinase) the sprouts may be more effective. Hard to know; I'm not aware of any relevant studies.
I take the capsules because I'm lazy and have a hard time tending growing sprouts 3 times a day, every day.
I used the sprouts for a while. My local sprout grower, predictably, was using BroccoSprouts seed patented by Johns Hopkins. Very high levels of sulforaphane. & then suddenly - no mention of BroccoSprouts on the label.
& so I asked him why? The company licensed to sell the seed kept jacking up the price. The seed he was now using produced maybe 15% less sulforaphane. He said that he was also using the sprouts every day for PCa & was also concerned that he was getting a strong enough dose.
He told me what he was taking in addition to the sprouts & it was suspiciously similar to what I was using. Turned out that we were seeing the same integrative medicine doctor!
Anyway, here is how I used the sprouts. The important thing is to do maximum damage to the cells, so as to release the myrosinase from its compartment. I pureed a half dozen packages of sprouts & poured into an ice cube tray. I thawed one cube each morning & swallowed the stuff. Tasted fine.
The supply of spouts in the local supermarket became spotty & I eventually switched to BroccoMax.

Like Dan, Joel, and Coffey, I take Jarrow Formulas BroccoMax. You can get it relatively inexpensively from Amazon. And if you’re an Amazon Prime member you get free two day shipping.
Yes. amazon.com/dp/B0013OVTM0?ta...
It's currently selling for $18.87 a bottle of 60 or $29.20 for 120 caps, when bought one at a time. If you subscribe to get one or more bottles delivered regulalary (one per month, one every other month, many options) the price drops to as low as $16.04 for 60 caps and $24.82 for 120 caps.
I get several of my supplements on Amazon subscription, so my discount is 15%. You save 5% even if Broccomax is the only subscription.
Yeah, I had my tongue firmly in cheek when I wrote that. I knew you would get the joke.
I've never seen a product that quantifies the amount of myrosinase. Do you know of any?
I take Broccomax without raw broccoli.
Bill,
As a vegan I must urge you to source your sulfurophane naturally through the cruciferous vegetables it comes from. I once took sulfurophane capsules that may have been excellent, but over time I came to understand capsules can not match the natural source in potency and efficacy.

Bill,
That's great. Sulforaphane is not restricted to broccoli or broccoli sprouts. Discussions of this single chemical agent often focuses on broccoli and the sprouts only and overlook the other vegetables, the issue of synergy between the different chemical agents in these vegetables, and the fact there are many nutrients in vegetables - and berries - that have yet to be identified, to say nothing of being tested for their therapeutic potential.
The following below are important sources that should find their way regularly into your daily salad. My salad is usually the focus of my evening meal. But I get cruciferous vegetables into my lunch very often. For example, at lunch I very frequently include red radishes in my hummus-dipping.
Sulforaphane can be found in Brussels sprout, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy, kale, collards, Chinese broccoli, broccoli raab, kohlrabi, mustard, turnip, radish, arugula, and watercress.
I overlooked providing these videos earlier.

Don't miss Dr. Joel Fuhrman's lecture to a room full of nutritionists at YouTube. The title is "Reversing Disease Through Nutritional Medicine." Have you read his book "Eat to LIve" Every cancer patient needs to read it.

i started eating broccoli and carrots about 40 years ago, at least 3-4 large servings/week. i'm now battling 4 different kinds of cancer... and not by hugging trees.
80 grams 3 day fresh broccoli sprouts daily for me …
The following paper is often quoted. & why not? BroccoSprouts originated at JH.
"Unexpectedly, 3-day-old sprouts of cultivars of certain crucifers including broccoli and cauliflower contain 10–100 times higher levels of glucoraphanin (the glucosinolate of sulforaphane) than do the corresponding mature plants."
&, of course, sprouts are usually eaten ray, while mature plants are usually eaten cooked. Heat treatment destroys the myrosinase that is essential for releasing sulforaphane.
NOTE: "Notably, sprouts of many broccoli cultivars contain negligible quantities of indole glucosinolates, which predominate in the mature vegetable and may give rise to degradation products (e.g., indole-3-carbinol) that can enhance tumorigenesis."
Some swear by I3C & there are plenty of products, but I have always steered clear of it.

I'm done with Life Extension. After some years on their auto-ship program for ProsStay (Vitamin C and K3, Dr. Jonathan V. Wright formula) they decided to drop that brand, and started shipping an entirely unrelated product - at over twice the cost! I only noticed when my credit card bill started showing $80 charges that I didn't recognize.
That's fraud and theft, and they will never get another dime from me.
