I am looking for a good prostate cancer diet book. Please recommend one. We haven't put much effort into diet thus far and want to start.

A book exists thats entitled "What to eat if you have cancer". Diet is a very touchy subject in this group. If someone mentions that refined sugar is harmful, they need to be prepared for a drone strike on their location. I went to a 100% plant based diet and feel much, much better. If you are completely dedicated to a diet change, you might want to visit the following web site.

forksoverknives.com. It will get you started. I strongly believe that vigorous daily exercise combined with a carefully planned diet and the cancer drugs I take, work in a synergic manner. My wife also went vegan and most of her minor aliments vanished. Good luck.

Rich, I try and inject a touch of humor once in awhile. I'm sure most of us could use a laugh here and there. I mean no harm as I respect everyone in this group, most of whom are far more intelligent and informed than me.

Humor reduces the stress. I watch stand up comedians on UTube.

Look for a good Mediterranean Diet book that uses the full 40% fat approach.

Or get Dr. Myers version:

"New Prostate Cancer Nutrition Book" (2012).

Its hard to decide which approach to take. I was an ultra runner on a keto plant and lean protien based diet (ie everything that should have helped cut my risk) and still was suprised with stage 4 cancer. Now, on chemo doc doesnt want me to eat too much vitamin c and all the fresh salad and veg can be dangerous when my immune system is down. So what to eat?

I read a lot about diets, say its alright to eat fruit, I believe that is right when a person doesn't have cancer, but after finding out about even sugar from fruit can feed cancer at a higher rate. I believe sugar is the culprit in the western diet, because we have it in everything that is in a box or bag to make it taste better. I'm not sure why veggies are bad for you but I don't know anything about Chemo, I was told not to take vitamins while doing Hormone therapy and radiation. not sure why,

bigm62, I was given a book by a nutritionist that also recommended to stay away from fresh vegetables on chemo. I asked the nurse oncologist about it and she said that was the recommendation a long time ago. The book the nutritionist gave me was from 2002. We went to a second nutritionist. She was useless. Basically she told my husband to eat whatever her wanted.

As I have posted elsewhere, I have gone vegan. It hasnt cured my cancer but I have experienced significant improvements in all other health indicators - LDL and total cholesterol reduced significantly, triglycerides haved, blood pressure down.

I recommend the began appriach because apart from the cancer, once you start ADT you have to worry about insulin resistance, diabetes, increased body fat and cardiovascular disease. The vegan diet is the best way to address these rusks IMHO. And tou dont need to buy a book. Juat eat fruit and vegetables.

Greta Macaire R.D., the senior resident dietitian at UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center, has made several recent presentations on "Nutrition and Prostate Cancer". For example:

pcasupportgroup.org/nutriti...

Her colorful slides are easy on the eye and in many ways fit right in with shopping/menu planning:

Jane Plant has written two books about prostate cancer one a general appreciation and approach to Pca and the other diet advice and loads of menus ( can be obtained from Amozon). She is very much opposed to Milk and meat products. I have been following her advice for thee years and along with standard medical treatment i like to think it is helping only time will tell. One thing I can confirm being a Veggie (i eat Fish) seemed to stop weight gain which in my case was a problem at the beginning of hormone treatment.

Whilst here can I say a big thank you to everyone on this site for all your advice and information. I am from the UK so to get Pca information from such places as the States and down under (which is what we call Australia amongst other things) and the different approaches is great.

For the record PSA in 2014 was 180 now has been bouncing along at about 7 ever since and scans show my bone mets stable ( hip several and back Two) no pain just usual side effects from treatment. No chemo yet.

Yep this is a great place for all helpful folk on here im from Aussie land but live in the UK have been called a convict a few times before still I reply with calling the locals POME prisoners of Mother England ;-) bit of happy banter. Still back to the subject I have cut right down on sugary stuff even though there is no proof to say other wise and eat more fruit and veg just for my own piece of mind snd generally feel better but still on early chemo & ADT at the moment.

Take care

Thank you. Lots of good advice on this sight. There is definitely a lot of similarities on how everyone is handling diet.. Lots of veggies and less meat and dairy seem to be an easy start,

UCSF’s cancer center has an excellent document on diet and prostate cancer:

Also I recommend the nutritionfacts.org web site; using the search box on their home page search for “prostate cancer”.

Looks like you have received lots of good suggestions. Here is a short, nicely organized nutrition guide for men with prostate cancer. Best of luck!

I read more than 20 books on Diet and Cancer whilst researching my latest book, An ABC of Prostate Cancer Today. Best book was "Everything you need to know to beat Cancer" by Dr Chris Woollams of CancerActive, followed by a recent book by Dr Mercola titled "Fat for Fuel".

I have found the Forks Over Knives cookbook to be decent. Most of the recipe's my husband likes and some the kids will even eat. They love the vegan chilli. The recipe's that use creamed cauliflower instead of milk did not go over well with the gang though. That still leaves a lot. I also like the book "52 simple ways to prevent and turn off cancer" It is more about what to eat instead of what NOT to eat... it is a sweet and simple book. NutritionFacts is coming out with a new book.. the "How Not To Die" Cookbook. I preordered it. I love the book "How Not To Die" it is interesting and has a good index so you can jump to the part that interests you.(It is food based)

Thank you. I really enjoyed your reply. My daughter is still a picky eater at 14. I will skip the recipe with creamed cauliflower. Ha.
