Keto Diet for APC

I am new to Health Unlocked. Here is a little about myself and I am wondering if anyone else is using Ketosis as a complimentary therapy. I am 58 and have advanced prostate cancer that has metastasized to my bladder and have been treated with ADT for the last 2&1/2 years using Lupron and Zytiga. The following is a reply I submitted to an earlier post.

Yes, I have had the same lack of success in finding Keto/Advanced Prostate Cancer results. I have researched the work of Dr. Dominick D'agastino and Dr. Thomas Seyfried and others and have seen the evidence of a Keto Diet in starving the cancer cells for other cancers. Dietdoctor.com has a great article in their latest newsletter dietdoctor.com/low-carb/ket... about the 18 year old young man whose terminal cancer was abated by using a keto diet. Unfortunately prostate cancer does not feed on glucose like most other cancers. It feeds on androgen. I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer 2 & 1/2 years ago and have been treated with just ADT all that time. I am convinced that my obesity and diabetes were the cause of my cancer so I decided to try a keto diet to not help with a cure for my cancer but to treat the cause of my cancer. In the 4 months of being keto I have lost over 40 lbs, my A1C dropped from 7.8 to 6.0 and my bad cholesterol was reversed. I had an NMR lipid profile done and my results were so good my doctor removed my statin drug and I am now in the process of being weened of my BP meds. My bio markers have improved so much that I haven't felt this good since my 20's. Soon the only meds that I will be taking are my Lupron and Zytiga. I used to take 8-10 pills a day. So I know that a Keto/IF lifestyle won't cure my prostate cancer but it couldn't hurt. Attacking the cause of my cancer and improving my health is the one thing I can do to help myself. Now I need to start learning about my gut biome and immune system. Are any of the guys here on a keto/intermittent fasting lifestyle? I am brand new to Health Unlocked so I thought I would chip in with my APC experience.

Congrads, on losing excess weight and getting your A1c to 6.0; I know how hard it is to do this action. I have APC and lost 90 lbs, and have 40 lbs to go. I got my A1c to 5.8 without drugs. Keep up the effort.

Dr. Nasha Winters has a new book out: "The Metabolic Approach to Cancer: Integrating Deep Nutrition, the Ketogenic Diet, and Nontoxic Bio-Individualized Therapies." It is certainly interesting. Since 2006 I've understood that CaP is androgen-driven, but I don't understand if sugars can play a part in that. I've been castrate-resistant since 2011 and have used a # of things to try to keep a lid on it, but have not (yet) tried the keto diet. Being on Lupron continuously for over 7 years now I know the slide towards metabolic syndrome and the like, and, fortunately, have a PCP who long ago started me on metformin and statins ... both of which have probably helped keep my cancer at bay as much as the standard treatments. If our cancer cells can take cholesterol and convert that to androgens to use as fuel, well, that in itself is good reason to keep cholesterol levels low, but I wonder how much of that is diet and how much genetic. In any case, it is always good to lose weight, to keep your "terrain" healthy, and be a worthy opponent to this beast.

RJ, My cholesterol went from very bad to very good after only several months on the Keto diet. It improved so much that my PCP told me to stop taking my statin drug. I take Metformin because it is a great cancer drug in that it keeps insulin low. I have seen a lot of research that the lower glucose levels and insulin are the better it is for all cancers. I sincerely believe that my obesity and diabetes (now gone due to ketosis) are what caused my cancer. My favorite website that got me into Ketosis and LCHF is dietdoctor.com
