Hopefully this applies to other people in situations where accommodations aren't mandated...
I take a yoga class that I love. Fabulous instructor at a great price. The issue is music during class. My instructor plays great music which I would normally love. The problem is that she plays some songs with words (singing). My ADHD brain can't follow her instructions while singing is going on.
Question: Is it out of line to privately ask for her to only play instrumental music?
Note-she has a lot of instrumental music. I don't think she would have a problem with selection.
I know one solution is to change classes. But I LOVE her class.
How do we advocate for ourselves in public or do we even try?

Yoga is much more than just asanas (physical execises) and even asans are not like other exercises where music may be used to motivate you. Focusing on your poses is important and you don't need distractions. May be you can try telling her that music distracts you from the practice of yoga and makes it hard to focus and if it would be possible to play less distracting music such as instrumental?
I am a yoga instructor and I have "silent" classes for various reasons and its enjoyed by all. Im sure having a private conversation would not be out of line at all
I would totally ask her to play instrumental during class. Maybe tell her if she needs to play the ones with words, maybe ask her to do that before or after class? There’s nothing wrong in asking for these accommodations.
there is a big difference between advocating for ourselves vs having personal preferences.
asking for music that u vibe with better isnt advocating.
yoga class is very unique. some people like different levels of light vs darkness, different scent or no scent at all, candles or no candles, diff volume of the music, in your case- the type of music. im sure everyone has a legit reason for their personal request, allergies, tinnitus, adhd, vertigo, trauma etc etc.
its impossible for the yoga instructor to create a class that fits everyones preferences n medical neurological needs.
also- keep in mind that music with words during yoga isnt necessarily an ADHD thing. i also do yoga n have ADHD n prefer music with words bc it actually helps me focus.
so this wouldnt be a matter of ADHD per say… what u r describing is personal❤️
Thanks for this perspective. I would say this is what my husband would agree with. I'm looking for both sides of the argument. Thanks for offering that!
Hi, In one yoga class I had to move as close to instructor as possible to stay on track. But I think it would be certainly acceptable to ask instructor especially mentioning that the lyrics makes it difficult for you to follow her instructions. Mention that volume alone may not be a solution.
Also see if any other students might feel that just instrumental music would be very helpful. Give praise for the music you like.
Being at the front of the class is key for me to pay attention in any situation. I need to get over the anxiety of being watched at yoga! Thanks for the support.
