Diagnosed with adhd as a child. Took medicine for a few years and was able to stop and finish school. Now as an adult struggling with home life. What is the process to be re-evaluated. Who do I need to make and appointment with?

Adult ADHD eval
look for a “neuropsychological evaluation” for adults. I didn’t know how to help my adult kid get an evaluation but when I mentioned this to my therapist, she told me that phrase and we found someone near us immediately.
Good luck.
talk to your physician and ask for a neuropsychiatric evaluation. They will send you to a physiatrist that will ask you questions about behaviors and how you process things. It took me 6 hours total, broken into 3 sessions.
hello,
it differs from place to place. some people have huge probs getting dx and for some people a family doctor will do it. My advice is that as an adult, if there is some long drawn out test and eval and questions about childhood n grades- that provider doesnt understand ADHD.
my eval came in the form of me private paying a psychiatric NP who talked to me- no questionnaires, no long tests, no blood work, dna test, brain scan, crazy stuff like that. just sitting down and talking about my struggle. i had been misdiagnosed for many years prior to that.
everyones experience getting dx seems to be different. my only advice is to get an eval by someone who can actually prescribe meds- rather you want to go that route or not. get dx by a person who has medical letters behind their name vs letters associated with mental heath counseling. 🍀
psychiatrist or primary care. Neuropsychological testing is not necessary for the diagnosis. Old medical records and or school records as well as collateral from a family member sufficient. Most people with adhd get treated by their pediatrician or their family physician.
Hi Lovelife101!
I'm really sorry to hear you're struggling. That struggle is real! I wasn't diagnosed until I was 50, but that diagnosis came about because I too was SERIOUSLY struggling with home life and work. Stuff I'd managed to do just fine for years, it seemed like I was suddenly incapable of doing. I honestly thought it was early onset dementia. Scared the hell out of me.
My GP referred me to a psychiatrist to be tested for ADHD. I filled out some questionnaires, but the majority of the appointment was person-to-person questions. They did ask if I'd been previously diagnosed, so if you can bring your records from your previous diagnosis, you might not even have to go through all the testing.
Wishing you all the best as you navigate this!
Too many people, especially doctors, asked if I had been diagnosed with ADHD. My answer was no, but here are my symptoms. I finally got an official diagnosis. (BTW I'm 72) I have an aversion to medications; so, I am currently seeing a psychologist to help me with coping skills rather than medication. I m learning to live with myself.
it really depends on whether your insurance requires a pre authorization for a specialist. I went to my PCP and he recommended someone. A psychiatrist would be the one to get a consultation with. My city has UNMC and Boystown hospitals that have research doctors that treat patients also. If you are seeing a therapist check if they have someone to recommend being that they cannot prescribe medication.
