Qelbree--is it causing emotional issues for your child?

My 8-year-old daughter has been taking 100mg extended release Qelbree for about 3 weeks now. Although we've noticed a positive difference in tADHD symptoms, we've noticed that it has caused sleep disturbances (most notably, falling asleep for 1-3 hours every day after school) and anxiety/mood issues. I knew these were a possibility, but she has been having some meltdowns that include sobbing and being inconsolable about certain things that make her anxious (i.e. math). She even mentioned once that she was "sad and didn't know why".

I decided that I would cut her dosage in half (the Dr. mentioned that as an option) and have been trying that for a few days. However, we are still having the same side effects.

Is anyone else's child experiencing these side-effects? What did you do to combat them? Did the symptoms go away?

Thanks in advance!

You should Never cut a Extended Release medication. Extended Release medications are Time Released . Cutting them means the patient is not getting less of the medication. Please read the information from the manufacturer. They state "Do not cut, crush or chew the capsule" under "How should I take QELBREE?" Click on Medication Guide at the bottom of the page at the link below.

I think you should find a new doctor. I agree with BlessedLady- you don't cut XR in half. Unless maybe you misunderstood her doctor and he meant we can cut the dosage in half meaning... instead of giving her 100mg he'll give you a new prescription for 50 mg

100mg seems awfully high to just start out. Especially for an 8 year old but some ADHD meds are different. Usually you start at a lower doseage and work your way up if needed. My son started at 20mg of adderal and then ended up at 60 and he becamse very angry and irritable. I'm assuming this is her PCP/pediatrician and not a phychiatrist? Give them a call and let him know what's going on.

I agree the doctor might have been misunderstood. If not, a new doctor is definitely in order
