F with ADHD; what type of Dr to help with hormones if beyond menopause

The past 3 years have been brutal for my executive functions (impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, and organization at home).

Diagnosed at age 37; stim medication/ Extended release.

My symptoms were manageable both at work and at home. Until I was in perimenopause. Didn’t make a connection with a decrease in my hormones.

Three years into menopause my symptoms are difficult to manage.

Decision making is difficult, sorting through important papers is difficult.

I am a very healthy 60 year old that feels like a mess.

ADDITUDEmag has an article on decreased estrogen leads to worsening symptoms.

Talk with your gynecologist.

My concern is that my gyn does not understand ADHD in women.

I would encourage you to see an Endocrinologist, who deals with hormones, or perhaps an Integrative, Functional Medicine, or Naturopathic doctor. They each play different roles. I choose not to take replacement hormones due to an increased risk of breast cancer. It depends upon how you feel about the types of help that you can seek. I appreciate that you mentioned ADDitude’s article on increasing ADHD symptoms as Estrogen decreases. This may help others. I truly hope that you find the help that is right for you.

Thank you. I’ve been given the name of a Naturopath and a Functional Medicine Dr. I think about the increase risk of breast CA as well.

Here are some articles on ADHD and Menopause and Perimenopause:

Hey KarlaJo, look up BioTe hormone replacement pellets. All the wonderful hormones without the cancer concerns.
