Can’t Wait for My First Appointment

After many years of knowing I (44M) have ADHD but never getting a formal diagnosis, I made an appointment for this coming Friday. I contacted my primary care manager to ask if she could help me out and she said that while she could prescribe the medication, she is unable to diagnose me. Luckily, I’m a veteran, have some friends that go to the VA for ADHD, and I served with one of the doctors, so I was able to make an appointment with him for this Friday. I am fully aware that, a pill will not make things perfect, but after fighting years with this, I’m hoping that medication will help. I use to do list, running, and others things to try to maintain my ADHD “naturally,” but after going back to school for my master’s degree, and the economy, my ADHD was getting too much. I want things to get quiet and stop having to read the same paragraph in a textbook, over and over again.

While I have been active in Reddit for a while, I have never come to this sub until a week or two ago. I LOVE reading posts that are so familiar, I feel like I wrote them :) My question is, what will the first appointment be like and what should be ready for. I read a post from an individual who was worried they messed up their first appointment because they went blank. I always like to prepare for an upcoming doctors appointment because NOTHING makes me more angry than getting to the car in the parking lot and remember “DAMN, I forgot to ask them about…” I’m NOT wondering what I have to ask to get drugs, I just want to prepare myself. I have been putting this off for so long and I’m so ready to get help for this anxiety and constant worrying about EVERYTHING. I swear, I have never been more excited about a doctor’s appointment. Again, I’m not expecting everything to be gummy bears and rainbows, I’m just happy to be making progress.

Thank You For Your Service

You will be tested to determine if you have ADHD. Sometimes the diagnosis is not ADHD but something else. Each doctor has they own way of prescribing. If you are diagnosed with ADHD there is no way of knowing which medication you will be prescribed. It is important to remember it can take a while to find the right medication and then the right dosage.
