Starting Zoloft and a new job... when to take adderall again?

Hey yall! So I’ve been taking Adderall XR (15mg) and prescribed IR to take when needed for adhd (inattentive). The combo works well for me but my psych put me on Zoloft to get a handle on my depression. We tried wellbutrin which felt like magic but I was getting some of the serious/rare side effects so we had to stop. Anyways I started the zoloft yesterday and the nausea and drowsy side effects are kicking my ass!

I start a new remote job tomorrow and I’m kind of freaking out because I don’t feel like taking my adderall would be a good idea during this adjustment period, but I’m terrified of falling asleep during my meetings or making a bad impression because I can’t get work done. Has anyone been on this combo and when did you get back on adderall (or any stimulants)? I’m also thinking maybe trying just the IR tomorrow and seeing if that works okay, but just feeling really shitty and unmotivated right now.

Really appreciate anyones experiences or advice!! Thank you!

If you were prescribed them together. Try taking the immediate release only. That way if they do not work well for you. You should not have to wait the entire day for it to be over. By the way, if it was dangerous to combine both medications. Your pharmacist would not have filled the last prescription. There are people that both medications with no problems.

Are you taking the Zoloft on a empty stomach ? Have you discussed the nausea with your pharmacist or doctor ?

Thank you for your reply! The nausea comes in waves, but I started the medication yesterday and my psych warned me that was one of the side effects the first week. Ive been taking the zoloft around 4pm since thats when i picked it up yesterday but I think tomorrow im going to try taking it at night so I can fall asleep. I’m hoping the adderall can wake me up!

Not a doctor here, but your body should be used to the Adderall so you shouldn't have any side effects. Ask your doctor if you can cut your zoloft in half if you're having heavy side effects at first. Go half Zoloft and full Adderall. Again, not medical advice here.

Here's a link that mentions in early paragraph that zoloft is a pill that can be safely cut in half without reducing efficacy.

Thank you so much! If the side effects are still bad tomorrow I’ll ask my psych about cutting them in half, that’s great advice!

If your doctor didn't tell you to stop the Adderall, then there's probably no reason to. In any case, you should be asking your doctor, not a bunch of randos on the internet.

She did tell me to wait a few days to start the adderall again so I could adjust to the zoloft. It's been a few days so I was just hoping to hear others experiences about their process. Also just advice on managing a new job with the medication but thank you for the comment!

I just added the stimulant to my antidepressant that I had been on for a while. So I get it: you're starting two meds at the same time?

I've been on stimulants for about a year now and just starting the antidepressant, so reverse from you! May I ask what meds you are taking and if you find that it's helped you?

I’ve been on both Zoloft (200mg) and Adderall XR (20mg) for over 6months now and I feel great. I take all of my meds (I have quite a few lol) in the AM and it has worked out well for me. I have found that I will have nausea if I take on an empty stomach though and I also had a reaction to Wellbutrin which was why I switched to Zoloft.

Glad to see someone with a positive experience! The reviews I’ve heard about zoloft have been rather negative but I want to stay hopeful. My friend tried the combo a while ago but said she felt the zoloft was cancelling out her adderall. Have you felt like this or do you find the adderall is still effective seperate from zoloft?

I have found that I needed to increase my Adderall but overall I still feel it’s effects.

The same combo here. I've been on zoloft for years and adderall for about 3months now. The first few weeks of taking zoloft I had the same experience. Taking it in the morning would make me drowsy at about 3pm. And the nausea was bad, but went away after my body got used to it. Let your Dr. Know. And you could take it morning or evening. I take it in the morning with food to avoid the GI symptoms and I'm fine.

With adderall, I take 10mg xr with zoloft 100mg in the morning 7.30-8.00am, then 10mg ir at 10.30am to help focus on my distasteful task😀, and 5mg ir at about 1.00pm as needed. It's helping me good.

It is going to be okay!! Just talk to your doctor, tell him/ her about your daily schedule and any symptoms you may experience.

Take care 🙂

Thank you for the thoughful response!! I took the zoloft last night and was tired but up till 5 from the nausea 😅 I tried adderall yesterday and it worked very well but the nausea and the addy appetite is not a good combo 😂 Hopefully I’ll be able to switch it to the morning eventually and take it with food like you!

I have been on zoloft in the past and had bad nausea the first week, maybe 10 days, but then it passed. Hopefully it will pass soon for you too.
