I have had ADHD for 30+ years and have had all the fallouts that come with the gift* and haven’t used medication but when my second marriage was on the fringe I decided to talk to a doctor and I tried Straterra at 37 years old it made the racing thoughts go away but it caused some sexual side effects I did not agree to and in the trash they went. I was on meds for about two months and afterwards I decided if I managed to live this long without them why not the rest of my life. I am not going to sugarcoat it ADHD is like a rollercoaster it has its ups and downs but management can be obtained through determination. I did a lot of trial and error and found that staying positive is the best answer. I am not going to lie there are a lot of constant worries but again prevalence never giving up. Working out and sunshine are your best friends. Vitamin D is a must and I take SamE with a folic acid supplement and that is a good combo. Acceptance of ADHD is a must you have some shortfalls but you also have some great benefits like never losing hope and thinking outside the box. Some people will agree with you and some won’t keep in mind if you accept yourself that is what really matters.
I just tried two days of Straterra BP was 170/115 and I couldn't drive or walk. It was terrible. I was asked to take it at night but I'd rather not have a stroke in the middle of the night. My hands had this strange light feeling to them.
Was on Straterra not for me I have no remorse for not taking it. I am who I am a special breed you are too and you have good days and bad days. Don’t think that meds will make you perfect I am who I am and accept it.
I've tried a ton of standard ADHD meds that either didn't work or has side effects that were intolerable. There are less commonly used meds like Wellbutrin and Provigil that may be worth trying to see if they help without causing intolerable side effects. I'm currently trying Armodafinal. We all know how hard it can be to meet expectations of neuro typicals. I believe it's at least worth it to seek out the best care possible and try what's available to see if I can take out some barriers that make life harder for me.
And if you feel like you don't have a good relationship with your prescriber, or don't feel like they know how to help you, look for a new one.
I think of it a little bit like when you go to the grocery store looking for a specialty item that you can't find. You can ask anyone to help you find it, but if you can figure out what department it should be in and then find someone who works in that department, you're more likely to get your needs met or be referred to someone who can help you find what you're looking for.
A couple years ago I discovered neurotropics while Googling Alternatives to adderall...which are different types of supplements that have affects on the brain chemistry and purported to help manage focus and motivation and cognitive functions that normally are associated with people who have ADHD.
I took them for a couple months with some noticeable improvement, but the cost was prohibitive given my income at that time.
And I've been self employed for 10 years the only time I start thinking about needing to get medication as when I get a wild idea that need to be something I am not. And conform to some standards that the majority have created and say we should be doing.
