Are we born with adhd
I was a full term baby, actually a week overdue. The medical community thinks genetics could play a huge role, and I tend to agree. I'm the first in my family with this diagnosis, but the more I learn about this condition, the more I think that some family members have it and were never diagnosed. Back when my parents and grandparents were kids, ADHD wasn't a thing - you were just lazy.
I've also heard that physical trauma can be a cause, as well as reduced sizing of certain portions of the brain.
That is, no one knows for sure!
As a psychology student, it's largely genetic, but it can also be a result of premature birth, poorly managed diabetes, and if I'm not wrong, also drugs/alcohol/smoke during pragnancy, and probably other things I can't remember right now. This said, it can be worsened by environmental factors, or also caused to manifest if the gene is there but latent
Sometimes I think trying to compete in k-12 really makes our lives hard. We have to adjust to learning information that is boring or based on capitalism or something I/we distain. If we struggle then we begin to think we are flawed because we can't learn something or impress some teacher or judgmental person. Please don't think I am minimizing anything you struggle with, but what if you were born right on time and you are not damaged. What if you are having a hard time using your gifts in the world currently? What if you are wonderful and talented and gifted, and you haven't had the chance to share yourself with us.
