My fiance is currently in prison because of a DUI do to her alcohol addiction which she is currently in the process of trying to overcome and for the first time in her life has been doing just that, but is being retaliated against by the DOC system as she tries to fight for her medical right to treat her ADHD. We have covered all of the avenues we know of in the state of SD, but no one seems to really care when it comes to people who are incarcerated. I have even talked to NAMI on her behalf and the information they gave me gave us a few avenues to pursue but in the end led to just another dead end unfortunately. So I guess I am on here to see if anyone has any ideas or even coping tools that I can get for her and send to her to help her as they will not give her the proper medication nor the therapy she has asked for to cope with her condition. Any response would be appreciated thank you.

Help for my Fiance
I am in the UK under the NHS Health Service.
Prisoners here are looked after like anyone else on the outside of prison. If they need hospital care or medications they get them from the health service. In most cases the drugs would be given in the prison health centre on a daily basis, They would watch the patient take their medications.
There are also outlets for treatments in prison and they would be treated accordingly. If hospital visits are required they will be taken to the ward for treatment. Under supervision. then returned to prison hospital if the need arises.
Sorry that is all I can say, I am not in the States and your health service is basically unknown. However addiction can be treated on site here as well, it seems to be a common problem here as well as America. So they should be able to help

Thanks for taking the time to write me. Well the issue we are dealing with is that the department of corrections is retaliating against her for speaking out against the corruption and neglect of medical needs. Just recently a woman side because they failed to meet her medical needs and told her she was faking it instead of taking her to the emergency room. They tried to cover it up but there were to many witnesses to the whole ordeal. In the same aspect they were putting her on medication other than her what she is supposed to be taking one of them actually made her chest hurt and they basically ignored her please about it. It also made her more aggressive and caused her to get major right ups which she fought them on as well being it was the medication they gave her that was making her like that. It’s come to the point she filed a lawsuit against them and now they are trying to get her her meds or lets put it this way making it look like they are on paper anyways. It’s truly a mess to say the least and the government agencies we have gone through are all backing up the system which is unfortunate but the reality is if the truth got out the system would more than likely collapse. The reality is that what happens behind those closed doors regular people just don’t know unless they have a loved one inside of there. Yeah I know they are in there for a reason but even with that they still have basic rights as well. I was honestly blind to it all until I met her now I start to realize more and more why the preliminaries systems are broken. The reality is it’s big business and they make money off of each person they hold in there it’s one of the reasons they are always full and never empty. So we continue our fight to see if justice is truly out there or if it’s just a corrupt system as more and more people are starting to realize. It’s come to the point the people you think are supposed to be put there to help against these types of things will help but in the end find out they are just another cog in the system. That is why she asked me to get onto these sites because she feels we’ve been reaching out to the wrong people and maybe someone has been in her situation and can give ideas to where we need to go. When it comes to mental health and the incarceration system it’s flawed everywhere. I’ve even seen studies from around the world stating ADHD in inmates goes undiagnosed and because of it they spend more time in the system than a regular person does because they are untreated and another things is most institutions don’t even see it as a mental health issue to be honest. That is something has been fighting for in there as well because most of the prison staff just think it’s a joke when she tells them it’s a debilitating condition especially untreated. So this is honestly were we are at and even if there isn’t anyone out there that’s dealt with something like this maybe we can open other’s eyes to the situation.
I truly thank you for your response just the fact people are willing to respond will mean a lot to her so thank you for that.
IMO, Focus Factor supplements and Sam E are two OTC supplements available anywhere that are very beneficial for those with ADD. Focus Factor helps with motivation, concentration and focus and Sam E is for mood support. . I don’t know if you will be to purchase them and send them to her. I would check with the institution on the rules.
We have actually tried that before and unfortunately for her it didn’t work. Her biggest issue is her extreme hyperactivity and she tends to react to things without thinking until it’s to late so it causes her to get right ups. As for being able to send her anything pretty much the only thing I am allowed to send are things like books, pictures, and letters other than that nothing else is allowed. They even banned things like birthday cards and Christmas cards. It’s been an ongoing battle but I’m not willing to give up until I know for sure there is nothing we can do. Only time will tell. Thanks for the advice though.
