How to implement ADD coach’s suggestions?

’ve been seeing an ADD coach which has been brilliant as after years of seeing different counsellors, this person understands me!

During the session we worked out 3 areas that are most important for me to work on and together we came up with a plan.

Now I’m back home trying to implement the plan and I’m really struggling. One of the areas is my difficulty getting up in the mornings which always leads to me being late for work. He listed out a timings schedule for me with all the things I need to do in the morning with the kids etc and at what time. We worked out I needed to be getting up at least half an hour earlier.

But I can’t do it! I still hit snooze a few times and still leave it to the last minute to crawl out of bed.

Everything he said made sense and I was so positive about trying but I just can’t seem to get up any earlier! His suggestions are great but it’s easy to say ‘this is what you need to do’ but if it was that simple wouldn’t I have done it by now? I know what i need to do but I just can’t make it happen!

I’ve got my next session in a couple of weeks and I will feel embarrassed if I haven’t done what he’s suggested and worry he’ll think I’m not serious about changing.

Has anyone felt similar? How do you actually implement changes into your routine?

I honestly don't think a coach is for me. A therapist? Definitely! A coach, I feel, is too much pressure. Of course, that is what a coach is trained to do... push you. Gentle therapy works well for me. I am 61 years old. I recently started seeing a new therapist. She is awesome! Knowledgeable about ADHD. Knowledgeable about many mental illnesses. I already feel she is making a difference in my life. Coach or counselor... we must feel comfortable while working with them. I feel so bad that you worry about being embarrassed. I am sure he is familiar with the difficulties associated with ADHD. Don't be too hard on yourself.

I’ve definitely felt similar with my coach, however, one of the things we work on is that not everything needs to be perfect. If getting up earlier every day isn’t working for you then it’s going to be back to the drawing board. A coach is supposed to help you figure something out when the plan isn’t working as designed. Personally, I would try going to bed earlier before waking up earlier. You need your sleep in order to give you a boost throughout the day.

Hi Holly75,

I was going through my backlog, and saw your post. I was curious and wondering how things are working out? Both with getting up and with your coaching....

coaching does take time and implementing the changes is hard sometimes cause it’s a change... I know I don’t do well with changes..

As far as getting up on time took me a while to realize I am a pudzer, and mosey here and there.... at least until I get my coffee in me lol.

How has coaching helped? Are you still being coached?
