I'm new and joined because I haven't been able to find a support group and I'm really struggling w/ being a single mom of a son w/ ADHD in this pandemic. He was just diagnosed in May (albeit through telehealth which was much less than ideal.) He is not on meds and shows lots of emotional regulation difficulties. Makes it really hard to live together and share the little house 24/7! I feel we really need family counseling but his habit is to say "no" to anything I want to do. Suggestions for buy-in? (We did some but have since changed insurance.)

Hello there,
Sharing my journey here and what we did : Hope it may help you in someway to start the process.
My son is 14 yrs old now on Aspergers and ADHD. We had faced the same when he was very young. We started him on Meds as we couldn't control his emotions and constant meltdowns. However over the course of time along with the Meds ,we have done 6yrs of in home ABA therapy and one on one sessions with a therapist too every week . It has paid off so much. He has learned to cope with his emotions when feeling low or upset. He is much more matured now. Advocates for himself at school and seeks help when needed. He now understands his challenges . I know it 's a long road but you will surely see the progress . i and my husband have also taken parent sessions with one of his doctors to keep my sanity and not get stressed out. It helped our family a lot and we could understand what our son goes through and be more supportive to him . I can share some resources if you are interested for parent support groups. I hope this helps.
Big hug for joining the group! Welcome.
Children with ADHD benefit from 3 tools, counseling, medication and help in school. Medication ( just like glasses for children with vision problems) help them decreases impulsive behavior, so they can then work on school and life skills. There are many benefits to using all 3 tools. Start with one and then work your way through the others.
We are all on this journey together and hope you can help your son.
