Any suggestions - ADHD, ODD, Asperger's and Gifted IQ

Hi, I have a 10 year old adopted daughter who has been diagnosed and treated for ADHD for years with little improvement at home or school. We recently changed paediatricians and our new doc has spent a lot of time with my girl as she is quite unusual. Recent diagnoses include a gifted IQ with ODD and Asperger's. Is there anyone out there in a similar situation?

Welcome. I am not sure what you mean by treated? Usually there are 3 tools that help most kids with ADHD ( medication- a psychiatrist is most helpful, thearpy and an educational plan).

Have any of these helped? Unfortunately there is no one size fits all as you are experiencing. We had our psychiatrist write a letter to the school to support our sons needs. If your child is taking medication and you are not seeing a bug change in behavior then the medication is not correct. Type, dose and timing are all vital in helping to reduce symptoms.

Were you looking for help at school or home, or both?

I assume she qualifies for an educational plan- IQ does not impact services if you child needs help. If the school does an assessment and they see areas of need then the plan is written.

Hope this helps.. a little.

I believe there are several parents in this forum with children who have ASD as well as ADD. Our son has ASD, ADD, and is gifted. Being gifted can sometimes make diagnosis of ASD more challenging as the two share many common traits. I'm excited for your new diagnoses. Sometimes a label is just a label but sometimes it really opens the door to new insights and understanding and compassion as well as new therapies or even medication choices. The diagnoses of ASD can potentially really help a child who has struggled with misunderstood behavior. Both in terms of self understanding, compassion and self-advocacy, and also in offering new tools and understanding to others working with her. Have you reached out to ASD organizations yet or been referred to therapy? Definitely look up twice exceptional information from gifted organizations as well. They provide good info to help you advocate for her in school.
