Tips for Homeschooling

Hello everyone! I have 2 boys with ADHD and I found the following useful so I thought I would share!

1. Be prepared and organized. Eliminate clutter! Clutter can create stress.

2. Post a daily Schedule for your child to see- Include the time and exact details of what needs to be done. Start with waking up to getting dressed, brush teeth, etc. to the end of the day when your child goes to sleep. Include many breaks (The breaks can include going outside for a walk or run, having some time to call a friend, sit on a swing if you have one, ask your child what they would like to do during their break time. Check out GoNoodle on YouTube and act it out with them).

3. Utilize a timer to get things done. This creates a sense of urgency and kids with ADHD are motivated and excel with timelines. There is a kid friendly app called Happy Kids Timer. Kids love this app!

4. Set up a reward system and post it. The reward needs to be given as soon as the desired behavior is accomplished. For example, you have a poster board and you decorate it. On the poster board you put your child's name on it. Together you come up with ways a sticker can be earned. For example, your child needs to learn 10 state capitals by the end of the week so you break it down to learning 2 capitals per day. If your child accomplishes this goal, they receive a sticker. That gives instant gratification. Together, come up with the major prize. So, let's say as soon as your child earns 10 stickers they can create their own ice cream sundae!

5. Make schooling fun! Check out pinterest for ideas. Make songs together for memorization. Have them create an art project for a certain subject they are studying, etc.

6. Begin the day with exercise. Exercise is so good for our body and brain. You can go out for a bike ride, walk, run, skate, zumba indoors, watch videos on JiuJitsu, etc. There is so much out there to choose from.

7. Educate yourself more on ADHD by watching YouTube Videos (How to ADHD is a good one), utilize Google, find ADHD groups on Facebook, read books such as The Explosive Child, etc.

8. Check out the Messenger Kids App-Allows your child to stay connected with their friends and has safety restrictions for parents

9. Eat Healthy-make their food fun looking. You can find so many ideas on Pinterest

10. Stay Consistent! Routine is key and gives your child a sense of security.

Remember, these times are difficult for all of us. Take a time out for yourself if you need to. Look at this time as a time to grow closer to your child. A time to learn and understand them more. Love is the key!

My daughter and I divided and conquered last night, she took the middle schooler and I had the high schooler. The teachers are giving assignments and giving a week to finish them.

We got three subjects done last night. In the evenings the high schooler gets more animated and kept talking through the whole thing. That drives my daughter crazy but not me. We had a good bonding experience and got a lot done in fits and starts.

I would let him chat for a few minutes when questions in different subjects led to comments about connected things. But I also learned a lot about how he feels about things.

This is so great. Thanks. My biggest struggle this homeschool experience is that my son will not cooperate and is not motivated to do anything. He is not motivated to get up in the morning to get dress and take a walk. When he takes a break, he doesn’t want to come

Back. I waste so much time trying to refocus him, and get him to do one little things it’s so hard.
