I have a 12-year-old boy, was top of his class. He is on medication. This year he is having some behavioral issues. I am now having trouble with the school seeing him as anything other than a behavioral issue. I am not getting services even when I ask for them, ie counseling, tutoring... anything. He is not presidential honors at this time but still has good grades. He tests 2 grades above level. (I think he is board honestly and falling through the cracks) he is mad, all the time. Is it a 12-year-old thing? Do I push at the school harder? They are not seeing ADHD as a disability at this time. any ideas, advice... I have a future rocket scientist that is feeling crushed.

do you have a diagnosis and an evaluation? I had to give the report to my son's school in order for them to accommodate him. It sounds like the school doesn't see his ADHD as a hindrance to his performance, so they won't accommodate. Im no expert though. my son has ADHD and is on medication. He really needs very little accommodations but the school gives him whatever his evaluation suggests (like extra time on tests). Otherwise, they consider him to be just regular classroom kid. Maybe your pediatrician can help. our pediatrician is very helpful to us.
We have had the same challenges, ie, it's much harder to get the school to do stuff if academic performance is on par (or better). You post reminded me of this article, which I thought was really inspiring - speaks to the unique challenges of being an adolescent boy in today's world. Hugs to you and your boy
They cannot deny services if he has an IEP.
