If psychiatrist is prescribing the medication, who is supposed to monitor them for heart rate, bp? My 13yo currently sees a psychiatrist who prescribes the med, when we go for visit, there isn't any medical check taking place like you would in a pediatrician's office. In the past, we saw a developmental/behavioral pediatrician, who did the medication mgmt and also sees us every 3 months. We had to change due to reduced insurance coverage :(.

Psychiatrist prescribing med, who would perform medical checks?
Our psychiatrist has done all that, but not often. If you notice symptoms they may do it more. I would communicate with them the most.
Hope you have success with the type, dose and timing.
Hello there,
My son is 13 yrs old with ASD and ADHD and on medication. His Psychiatrist takes his vitals every visit that is once a month . For the first time now she has also ordered a lab work which is different from the one the pediatrician orders at the yearly annual check up .
since these drugs are very strong and makes them very tired we were also told to often check how the child is doing at school (for example extremely tired ,dizzy or has no energy or motivation to do anything to check his blood pressure immediately) the school was notified with all the paper work so that they are aware of the symptoms and can reach out to the parents. Hope this helps .
Usually your GP. You could get your own blood pressure cuff and heart rate monitor, search online, they're pretty cheap nowadays.
My son sees his psychiatrist every 6 months. If he changes medications, he is seen by the psychiatrist more frequently. His vitals are checked each visit. I would encourage you to make appointments with his regular pediatrician to have vitals checked if there is concern. You can also ask why this has not been done with each visit to your child's psychiatrist. It is unusual.
our pediatrician does all the check-ups and med management. I had a private psych/ed evaluation, and then brought the report to my trusted pediatrician. He has taken over for us. he does the check-ups and prescribes the meds.
