Ds 9. Diagnosed with adhd inattentive in April. Prescribed 30mg Extended release Ritalin. Transformational at school. New school year same meds same old issues. I kind of worry I forced a diagnosis as was a private specialist and I had been looking at for years. Feel very stressed. Love ds to bits but tonight felt was blaming him for struggles at school cried in front of him. Big no no. Just feeling v stressed and dreading parents evening next week

I recently found a website that has really helped me feel better parenting as well as parent better. You might want to check it out. It’s called Tilt Parenting and its all about parenting kids that are wired differently. They have podcasts and a book too. It offers techniques to stay calm, change your perspective so you are more effective and other ideas that are different from typical parenting books. You are not alone in your worries, self-doubt and struggles.

Remember that you had specific concerns that led you to seek help. Those concerns are valid. If your son has begun having issues again it could be that he needs his medication fine tuned, that he needs additional support at school (executive functioning skills?), or additional therapy. Do not doubt your concerns. There just may be more support needed. Try the 7 day challenge on the Tilt parenting website—you need to take care of you.

I don't think there is anything wrong with crying in front of your child. Later you could say Mommy sometimes gets overwhelmed but I am better now. Kids need to know it is ok to cry sometimes.

As far as blaming him for his behavior you could apologize, let him know that is what people do if they say the wrong thing when angry or upset.

Hang in there. The good news that your ds responded well to the stimulant last school year. Don't blame yourself. Your child has a medical condition. Meds very, very, often have to be adjusted. Keeping a behavior diary and reviewing it with your physician can be very helpful. Based on what is going on, it could be a dosage issue, adjustment in the type of long acting stimulant/short acting option, brand change, addition of another med, etc. Be good to yourself. We are not the cause of our kids conditions. That being said however, we will have to be "extra-emotionally-strong" and resilient to handle our kids (something non-adhd parents often will not understand). Find a therapist for yourself (one that does not blame you, one that is empathetic). Good luck,
