How do I tell my boss that my child has regular appointments for her ADHD and I will leave work early

How do let my manager know that my daughter (ADHD) has regular appointments with her pediatrician every 3 months and a therapist at least once a month. I make her appointments very late in the afternoon and after hours if /when those spots are open. Should I let him know? I am moving to a different department of the company and we will be working more closer together.

Hi Wendy. I would level with my boss and let him know about the appointments. I don't think you need to be graphically specific about the nature of the appointments but rather fill him in on the time requirements, if it relates to time away from work.

Good luck and God bless.

Exactly what dubst3pM4UL said. Be straight forward with your boss and let him/her know that your child requires regular medical appointments, and that while you do your best to schedule them outside of work hours, sometimes it's unavoidable and you may have to leave early every few months; then ask how you can work out a compromise on those days. Some companies allow you to take half-days (or even time in 15 min increments!) out of sick time or PTO if the schedule is so rigid that you can't just jet a few minutes early, or alternatively you might suggest that you 'make up the time' by coming in early on appointment days or shift-swap with someone so you get your full 8 hours but can still leave on time to make your appointments. This is especially if you're salaried vs hourly, or work in a position where your hours can be more easily adjusted without too much impact to any potential coverage needed by the department.

I've been lucky in my current position that my boss is super flexible, and has literally said "I don't care what hours you keep as long as your work is getting done." He's also extremely understanding and accommodating when it comes to family matters and work/life balance. I hope you have someone just as caring!

Hey Wendy! Checking in - what'd your boss say? Any updates?

Sorry for the long delay, I did tell my boss of the regular appointments without going into great details and he was really chill about it. Guess I worried about it more than he did.
