Montessori?!

Hello! I have a 7 year old adhd, anxiety/depression, dyslexia. I had trouble with bullying in public school and his IEP had him out of the classroom most of the day so I started him in a small Montessori school?! Has anyone else tried Montessori?! Does it help their self esteem and do they want to learn?

I’m sorry to hear your child was being bullied. That is unfortunate.

It really depends on the child & the school. Some kids do well in that setting, especially if there is a smaller student to teacher ratio and if the child is motivated. But many kids with ADHD really need the greater structure provided by a more traditional school. Also, private schools aren’t always as equipped to handle children with different needs.

Not that it won’t work, but the decision will definitely benefit from a lot of research, interviewing the school & their ability / desire to accommodate IEP / 504, and if your child can learn with the Montessori educational style.

Hope it’s a good fit!

My son got into a Montessori kindergarten and I declined and sent him to public school. They have to be self motivated and most have open classrooms where multiple grades will share one room. At his social skills class, the ASD and ADHD kids that were having the most trouble at school were in Montessori. My son, at least, thrives on military like structure. Oddly enough he wants to be a policeman lol

My six year old daughter has ADHD and I sent her to a Montessori for her pre-k and her kindergarten year. Although she was extremely blessed with caring teachers, and she was in an emotionally supportive environment, I don’t feel she gained the educational benefit from a Montessori school. I have her in a public school now..., with an IEP, and although she is a little behind..., she is reading and doing math better than I believe she would have been.., had I kept her in a Montessori. Her Neuro-Psychologist also told me that a Montessori setting for a child with ADHD is not beneficial, and ADHD children need a more traditional setting.

I hope it works out for you..., if you are going to give it a whirl.., just keep in mind that most Montessori schools will support you getting your child resources..., but they don’t usually have any accessible for them which means you would have to go out and get resources brought to school for her. Good luck!!!
