Solution?

I was at work today attend an IEP (I attend more than 30 each year) and a teacher said "instead of an F, I just enter a 0 as a place holder until the student completes the assignment".

I almost fell out of my chair! That is it, We require our son to do the work so if he gets an F we get busy and if her doesn't finish the assignment, but with a 0 he is made to do the work until it is done.

Your thoughts? Could I add this to his 504 plan?

Sounds like it could be worth a try! I’m definitely interested is hearing how this works out.

I think it's great. I tend to look at the f's anyways to see if they are incomplete assignments or if they are failed tests, but I like this idea as a helpful way for a parent to be able to quickly see if something still needs to be done. For so many kids it takes them longer to complete their work and extra time to finish work is something that should be considered for a 504 or IEP if a child needs it.

I am also of the mind set that we should not be letting our children "fail" because their disability makes it hard for them to complete something. If we apply this to real life we would get an extension, but not failure.

I would also what to give up if I just contuine to get an F, this is why so many families homeschool. It's about learning to knowledge not getting the grade.

Thanks

hmmmm....I'm not sure I like this. My daughter's IEP includes extra time for homework, but if there are no consequences for never doing the work then how do they learn to get it in on time?

Here is what I am thinking.. after X amount of time ( maybe 1 week-if the teacher doesn't have a sub) then it starts to go down by grade each day.

The problem I am trying to avoid is the F lowers his grade, a 0 doesn't, unless it is never done.

I like that. It lets them have the time and addresses the issues with the ADHD and helping them with the executive skills while still holding them accountable.

Always failing them with an F on each assignment is not helpful. They can and do the work.. that is the issue.
