My son is 8 years old and has surprisingly been potty trained since he was 1 but one thing we still haven't been able to master is actually getting the pee in the toilet. Almost always ends up as floor "decoration". I know this is fairly common with ADHDers. Curious if anyone has been through similar situations and if they have found any helpful tips that helped.

Troubles with using the bathroom

Take a stand now or you will end up with a teenager (or worse, an adult) who either thinks this is ok or who just doesn't notice!
- have him sit down to pee every time
- have him clean it up every time (with you watching him clean it and coaching him on whether it's clean enough)
- have a target in the toilet (wad a single sheet of TP and throw it in the bowl and he aims at that), but only after earning the privilege by successfully doing the first two items above for several months.
we have a sit down rule at home. Husband follows as well. Pee splatter from adults and kids alike is not cool and requires extra cleaning and who has time for that?!
Standing is for urinals designed to contain the splatter from standing up and for public bathrooms where others stand and make a mess.
Both my boys have accepted this (ages 8 and 3) and dad too (age 40). 😋
If this is a non-starter in your household, I recommend a chore wheel that rotates bathroom clean up duty to your 8 year old and the dad. It’s a gross job and you can point out mopping the floor and outer toilet bowl pee splatter and misses is a lot easier. It’s the same strategy as having a potty training 3 year old remove their own wet clothes and retrieve new ones when they have an accident. It’s just a natural consequence to peeing on yourself. Cleaning up after oneself should also be a natural consequence! At 8 he is capable of wiping up spills, and light chores with some support.
This sounds silly, but try a toilet target. It's sticker you put right in the bowl with a bullseye.
