About two months ago my 5 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD. I spoke with my peds and we started on Methylphenidate 10 mg. There was no change in his behavior and so it was uped it to 20 mg at which point he started to get very emotional. His meds were changed to Adderall 10 mg and he again became very emotional. Both meds seemed to help on his ability to focus in school and he was doing a better job keeping his hands to himself. I just couldn't have him so emotional. Spoke to the peds once again and we decided to take him off everything for 2 weeks. He started getting trouble again but continued to make progress. This past Friday we started him Intuniv.
We have a lot of issues at home with following directions and fighting with his sister. I feel like I am loosing control. I tried and discipline using time outs or taking electronics away but he does not seem to care. I am looking for help! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

parenting ADHD kids is so mentally and physically demanding. it is also hard to know what to do for the best. I have twins with ADHD and neither responded well to methylphenidate at all. they would never eat but had no positive effects on their behaviour. Both were then moved on to elvanse (lisdexamphetamine) and the transformation was amazing. Each child is very different and it may take several tries before you find the right one for your child. Mine are now doing really well in school and with their peers. Just keep going is all I can say.
without the right meds, my kids did not respond to any reward charts or punishments. they just cannot focus long enough and are too impulsive to change their behaviour.
Good luck to you and I hope things improve.
p..s . although I still have major problems with my boys when their meds wear off in the evening , I found that visual timers and large digital clocks are a great way to get things done on time...e.g. 1hr on the ipad, dressed for school at 8:00 etc.
My son has been on methylphenidate for several years now. I have to say that there were times that the pharmacy gave us a batch that was from a different manufacturer and the results were much different. Had we not had a good response from many of the other batches we would have ruled methylphenidate out. I know its a shot in the dark but find out from your pharmacy who manufactures the methylphenidate you are getting and ask them if they use more than one manufacturer. If they do not I would call other pharmacies and work with a pharmacy that uses a different manufacturer. I know this seems so far stretched but i am being 100% honest. It was night and day difference for my son.
