Help I don’t know what to do.

My partner can’t handle my kid. She just got kicked out of daycare for hitting another child. My silly ad/hd only child. Does not have any social skillls. She doesn’t listen. Has no focus. No attention span. Repeats our questions instead of answering them. Withholds her poop. Doesn’t self relate. We have to give her attention all the time. If we don’t she act out with oppositional behavior. Her communication skills are not on par for her age. I’m at my wits end. We tried behavioral therapy and she wouldn’t sit still to listen. Everyone has noticed it. Stuck as a prisoner of my child

I was your child. I was almost kicked out of preschool. I had limited social skills and little attention span. I also had to be the center of attention. I fell so far behind in those formative years of learning.

Executive Functuoning Disorder is often associated with ADHD and it’s absolutely crippling.

What helped you? I wish I could make life easier for her. I see how brilliant she is.

I was diagnosed 45 years ago. They told my parents to keep me off sugar and artificial colors/flavors and to take these pills. The doctor then sent my parents home not knowing what to expectbehaviour wise and how to handle an ADHD child.

I was told the pills would calm me down. I didn’t want to take them because I didn’t want to change. They should have told me it was a multivitamin I needed so I could grow big and strong. However, they sent my parents home not knowing what to expect.

ADHD and EFD never go away. However, the hyperactivity does lessen as an adult. The ADHD is a lot more manageable with medication. However, the EFD will always be there. Therefore, the person will always struggle learning and retaining information. However, there is a way to get the information into long term memory through constant repetition.

In my world my life starts over from every few seconds, minutes and hours. Time moves differently. Does your child frequently say, “I forgot”? I said it constantly because I did. I must write things down or they do not exist. The doctor told me do not think you are going to remember because you are not. Sometimes I say to myself I got this, I don’t need to write this down and one minute later I forgot what I was supposed to do..

The person afflicted and those around them can help the person with ADHD through routine and consistency.

I agree with Jorliss about constant repetition. Learning does happen but it takes time. A LOT of time. My boys are on a different learning curve than other kids their age. It's important to understand that having ADHD means children aren't on the same level in terms of social skills and behavior because of impulse control. Additional testing helps to reveal if there are executive functioning deficits like memory impairment and specific problems with comprehension in reading, math etc. If your partner is struggling with handling your child, you could try taking a class together on ADHD. Learning about it helps to understand your child better and to develop the patience you'll need to help her get through these difficult years. good luck!
