Hello everyone, I’m new to the group. My son was diagnosed with ADHD. I was told to buy a book and come back in 3 months. I’m looking for a new dr who has better bedside manners and can explain to me what I need to do. I’m like a fish out of water. I’m scared
New & afraid. : Hello everyone, I’m new... - CHADD's ADHD Pare...
New & afraid.
Don’t be scared. My son was recently diagnosed this past fall. We are fortunate to have a doctor, psychiatrist, and counselor who helped support our situation. I was recently shown a book titled “All Dogs Have ADHD”. I thought that it was a wonderful way to look at this diagnosis. My son is 7, and we are struggling still to find the right medication regimen, and some days I don’t have faith. However, you have to remind yourself to keep going, and remember that everything you’re enduring due to this diagnosis is not how your child truly feels most of the time. Please feel free to message me if you would like. I would love to have another person to talk to.
Yours,
Emily R.N.
Tired Mom
Howdy.
My daughter was diagnosed about 6 months ago. Although the diagnosis was scary, some days I have peace and some I do not. I remember the hearing the diagnosis, my brain shutting down, and not catching most of the remainder of the conversation. Leaving the office, completely blank and broken down.
Over the last 6 months I have tried to research, read, listen, and learn. Understand the diagnosis, understand my daughter, understand my options etc. I was first completely against medication. Today we will have our first appointment to look into a medication as my daughter is starter to notice more and we are starting to become concerned of potential anxiety or depression in the future.
Every child is different, what may work for one may not work for the next. I can say that we had exhausted everything we could think of. I would highly recommend finding a good Psychologist. Ours completed the extensive diagnosis, provided results, and we can meet with her whenever we have questions. We just had a hour session where we did random questions and it honestly made me feel amazing. Knowing my feelings are common, we are doing the correct thing, etc.
I would recommend the following channels, they have helped me a lot.

This community is great and learning more will help.
Thank you. I too blanked out and don’t remember much. I was told to buy a book and to come back in 3 months. I have another appointment set up with a psychologist to re run tests to see the severity and go from there. I appreciate you reaching out and sharing your experience
Oh Dear, I'm sorry.....we can all resonate with your feelings. It is hard to hear that our kids have anything wrong with them at all, especially something that will affect their education and be with them, probably, the rest of their life. We are mama-bears and we want to protect our cubs from anything and everything....so I totally understand your feelings. How old is your son? The diagnosis, is not something we can control, but the journey ahead is. Roll those sleeves up and grab the bull by the horns. Dr.'s response was seriously lame, but do go get that book, get a few. Google is amazing- it's how I found this place, which is wonderful- I love this community. I'll be a regular here- It's one of the best sources of info and support I have come across. Also try to get some perspective, while it is unfair (life is unfair) our kids have this, I'll happily take ADHD-C diagnosis (my 14 yo boy's diagonosis) over another more threatening, such as, a life threatening diagnosis any day. Good Luck to you! Stay Strong....you got this!
Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. My son is 7. He’s such a good kid. I do believe he is not as mature as other 7 year olds. I’m hoping that it clicks and silly things he does will soon be a thing of the past (like pinches. He thinks it’s funny to pinch people’s butts). I’m having him tested again with another neurologist who also works with a psychologist and see where this path leads us.
