Wow, 5 seems young to be officially diagnosed and I can understand it may be difficult to explain medications at that age. With my son, I made sure he was involved in conversations with dr. when first prescribed medication, by letting him ask questions and vice versa. Explained to him that nothing is bad wrong with him. Just like someone with cancer or even the flu take medicines, you need medication. It will help you be even better than you are because school and daily stuff won’t seem as hard. You may or may not have to take it forever, but you are lucky that what you have is fixable.
In am ,give medicine and not make it a big deal. My son liked dropping the Rx at pharmacy and then picking it up. Thought it was neat when he read his name on the bottle.
There are videos on YouTube for young viewers depicting a brain w/ ADHD before & after taking medication, etc. that help kids understand better
So, I empathize with you as my son & I are new to him taking medicine for ADHD. Literally started today even though he was officially diagnosed in October. First RX given was Concerta XL and he just could not swallow it. Took the Quillivant chewable with gummy vitamins w/ no problem.
We got this! As long as doing what is best for our kids!
I tell my grandsons that I take medicine, their grandpa takes medicine, that sometimes you need to take things that make your body work better.
I tell my son “It’s to do good at school”
Thank you all this helps alot
My 12-year-old calls it his “focus medicine” .
