Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows whether the 504 plan is only for public schools? how does it work for a private, parochial school? do private schools not need to provide accommodations for children with ADHD?
I am hoping someone knows?
thank you

Hi Letty. My son goes to a Charter school with is similar to a private school. He has a 504 plan. He is allowed frequent breaks, he is allowed to stand at his desk to do his work, he is also allowed to do partial homework assignments since they give so much and he cannot stay focused. I was told that all schools provide 504 plans but the accomodations per school is up to that facility. I hope this helps.
They don't need to but they do depending on the resource they have available to them. Not sure where you're located but in California they would partner with the local public school to help get that in place. I had my daughter in private school but finally had to pull her out. They were calling me to come get her 2-3 times a week because they were not equipped to handle her behavior. Very small school and sometimes all three administrative heads would be out at the same time. So it just all depends on the school.
This was my experience with a private daycare that also had a PreK program. They never had the staff to handle any disruption, so I was constantly being called to get my son. He's in a public kindergarten this year and it's been so much better.
My daughter went to a private school and I worked constantly with the school nurse or counselor to get accommodations she needed. A good staff will work with you although I had to bring notes form the doctor about her diagnosis.
I work as an instructional aide at a Catholic school and they do both Ieps and 504s. The IEPs come from whatever school district the child comes from even if they attend the parochial school. We also do 504 plans, but they are called by a different name here. I live in Ohio.
I am not sure if you got your answer yet but didn't see this until now, sorry.
Our school district assists any child living in or attending all schools in our boundaries. We wriotoöe a private school contract which has limited hours and equipment.
