My pediatrician said that my daughter's medicine suppresses her appetite. So about 7pm she's usually starving and wants to spend the next hour eating whatever she can get her hands on. She's actually a little underweight so the doctor wants her to eat a substantial snack then, something with fat, like ice cream, cheese, or peanut-butter. I wish the doctor would not tell her she can have ice cream whenever she wants. However, I do give it to her after dinner most nights. Cravings can sometimes be the body's way of saying "I need something" so I would defiantly give your child something to eat. I know I've loosened up about giving my kids candy now that I realize it's the ADHD causing the hyper behavior not the candy. One day when she wasn't on her medicine she ate all day. I can get her to eat apples and raw veggies because she loves crunchy foods, but yes, chips, candy, doughnuts, she wants those too. = ) Then comes the question, is it the sugar and gluten causing this behavior or the fact that she didn't take her medicine today? Personally, I think it's the medicine and not the sugar. She's excited and hyper on holidays before she ever has any candy or special treats. Any way, thanks for the interesting question, good luck to you!

From what I've been reading, it's the brain chemistry of the ADHD that causes the sugar/carb cravings, not the medication. My 13 yr old is the same way. Weekdays on the med he will only eat a few bites of breakfast, skip lunch, some dinner and then late night snacking. He is also very thin, so if he's requesting something to eat, I try to be flexible. Weekends seem to be playing catch-up with calories, which is good. My point is, don't make yourself crazy. Try to encourage/offer veggies and maybe do a multivitamin to supplement, but if they want to eat something (within reason), let them eat. Protein shakes work too..add fruit, protein powder, milk, ice cream..whatever works!
