coming off medications

My psychiatrist has recently raised the idea of reducing my medications for anxiety/depression/borderline personality disorder, and I’m absolutely petrified of returning to that dark place again. I’ve completed CBT and DBT and am still in weekly therapy.

Current main medications are: Lamotrigine 500mg (originally for seizure control until brain surgery, then as mood stabiliser), Sertraline 250mg, Lorazepam (PRN) and propranolol 20mg.

I’ve also recently had to change psychologists as I have moved from one therapy programme to another (Mentalisation Behavioural Therapy). Old psychologist was brilliant, new one is a bit laissez-faire.

Not sure what to do here - I don’t want to be on meds all my life (currently 22 years old), but my parents are pushing for me to reduce my meds as well - my mother is entirely anti-psychiatric/sleeping meds.

Thanks, and any advice is appreciated!

Hi Just_breathe_1

I can totally understand the concerns you have about reducing your medication, it would be daunting for me!

That’s an awful lot of medication but you must have needed it.

He has a least given the option, some may not have. Ultimately it is your decision but I’m hoping others here who have been through this, will offer their opinion.

Meanwhile, try not to stress about it, hopefully you have time to decide.

only reduce medication after chatting with your doctor I wouldn`t recommend cold Turkey and if you are reducing make sure it`s over a longer period of time.
