Getting Through the Holidays

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love the smells, the warmth, the colors and relaxation of this day. This is the first Thanksgiving we spent home in two years; previous years we spent camping in various parts of the US. Unfortunately, my kids were off to visit friends this year so it was just me and the husband. I was okay with that. I still made a turkey and kept the sides simple, so as not to overdue the eating. We had salad, a vegetable, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce to compliment the turkey. No seconds. After dinner, I cut up the turkey- putting the dark and light meats in storage bags and made soup with the carcass. I had planned everything pretty well. Later, we each had a single sized portion of pumpkin pie. I did go a little over on my normal caloric intake for the day - but I was controlled and had planned for it.

It was also a nice, sunny day and I went for a short walk, despite that I had somehow hurt my foot. I took it slow. I've been on my feet a lot for the past three days making treats for a school craft fair in another week. My granddaughter and I will be selling homemade "exotic" dipped pretzel rods and fudge. I give myself a pat on the back for not eating any of it. I make really good fudge in interesting flavors. This year, my newest flavor is pina colada!

We celebrate all the holidays this time of year - Chanukah and Christmas (and Festivus - LOL) - as our immediate family is very blended. We are Jewish, Muslim, Protestant and Catholic. This weekend, we will put up our little tree, set up our menorah and decorate the house with winter themed wreaths and lights.

I think I may have gotten my focus back on a healthier lifestyle. I've been trying to move more everyday. My goal is 10,000 steps/day and I have been successful the last 3 out of 4 days (and very close on the 4th). I am daily logging my foods in a journal and trying to plan what I will eat in advance. I am starting to feel better. I have made a little progress with the scale although didn't want to weigh myself this morning.

I will take each holiday as it comes and will plan my eating for each. I'm looking forward to a great 2024!

What are your plans for the holidays? How do you navigate the food?

Sounds like you and your husband had a great Thanksgiving dinner together.

You seem very well organised around your food.

To navigate the holidays and all the temptations I willplan ahead both food and snacks so that nothing enters my mouth unless I intend it to. I guess my approach is to eat intentionally.

Lovely story . My son lives in Sacramento so had similar feast and the whole road decorated their homes - almost a competition . He camps too - beware of the bears - Lake Tahoe . Halloween was also a time of eating and decorating gardens Xmas will be quieter then January will be spent visiting all of us in the UK and hiring a car definitely automatic drive as nobody in California drives manual’s according to him . Weather still around 20 degrees unlike us waking to frost in Northern England this morning
