What am I doing wrong?

RunJoRun50 profile image

I’m eating roughly 1300 calories a day but cannot seem to loose weight at all.

Just turned 50 5ft 8 and definitely in the menopause, so wondering if there is anything I can do to kick start my metabolism?

Admittedly my only exercise is c25k and I’m in wk 7, plus daily walks and reaching 5-10k steps a day.

So fed up!

Thanks in advance for any guidance 👍

Hello and welcome, RunJoRun50 :)

My first suggestions would be that you're not eating enough and that you may need to look at your food choices. This post, When weight loss is a struggle, may give you a different perspective healthunlocked.com/weight-l...

If you want to continue calorie counting, then find the correct range for you at the NHS BMI calculator and don't be tempted to undercut it. Alternatively, you could try something like this plan, straightforward and counting-free phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

You'll find everything you need from the forum in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/weight-l... Scroll through to see what's on offer. A good place to start would be joining a weekly weigh in - Friday's is under way with Caroline62 hosting - and using the Daily Diary. As you're a runner, you may like the Fit is Fun Club, too.

Active participation really pays off so I hope we'll see you out and about around the forum :)

Hi RunJoRun50.

Welcome. My thoughts are...

Your exercise level looks really good, so it could be you are not eating enough. Which sounds crazy but our bodies need enough fuel to function properly on a regular basis otherwise it will store ready for the famine it feels is coming. Your body also needs the right nutrients as well. Think of your body like a fire. To keep burning it needs enough fuel or it will not keep going. It also needs the right type and balance of fuel for its purpose otherwise it doesnt burn correctly.

A good starting point would be to check what your NHS advised calorie intake is, which you can find here, ( nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-we... ). I also did the 12week plan which is quite educational about what foods can help with weight loss and sustaining it, which you can find here (nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-we...

Others will be along with other ideas. No one plan works for everyone, so it will take time and trials to find what works best for your body. Have a look around the forum, the weekly weighin groups amd daily diary to help with planning meals are excellent support groups.

Hope that helps.

Hi, when I started calorie counting I went with 1450 kcal daily limit. I’m 5 ft 7 and I was 43 at the time. I went with this number because I wanted to learn to eat a certain amount that would later be enough to sustain the basic needs of a healthy weight. Now I think it could have been useful to start with higher limit...

I found counting calories to be very good tool for portion control and I intend to carry on using it. I don’t believe it’s enough though. We need to look not only at how much we eat but also at what we eat and when. What to eat - I address this by watching macronutrient and fibre intake, reducing processed carbs and eating full fat products. When I eat - I address that by time restricted eating (8 hour eating window daily). The combination of these three seems to be working quite well for me. Maybe some elements could be useful for you to consider as well. Feel free to ask if there’s anything I could do to help! All the best.

Hi, doesn't sound like enough calories to me, I'm using an app called my fitness pal, it shown me that in early days I ate too many carbs and not enough protein, I have increased my protein lowered carbs to within range and my weight is coming down. If u doing more exercise then your protein needs to be higher. I would say u need more towards 1450 cals
