I know that weighing in every day vs once per week is controversial but I feel quite strongly that checking in every day is best. Tracking the trend line helps you ignore the daily fluctuations.
Here's my weight history. You can see how the individual weigh ins are all over the place but the trend is fairly stable.
Over the long term, the fluctuations barely even matter. You can see some crazy red dots that are sometimes as much as five pounds above the trend line (I remember those parties well!) but the trend just keeps going down, down, down.

It interesting to see the dots like that, I used to weigh daily for the same reason, and take an overall average. 😊 It’s amazing how hard we have to work to lose half a pound but how 5 whole ones can appear overnight 😡
I was losing weight slowly but steadily for a couple of years until I hit my target (yellow dots). Then two things happened:
1. My brothers-in-law came to visit me and I gained liked 8 pounds in beer belly in one weekend. I've done that before many times and it usually disappears after a few days but…
2. That was a stressful period. My mother died. I emigrated back to the UK from the USA and selling my house over there was super stressful.
I didn't get back on track until I was properly settled over here in England.
BTW the vertical grid lines are months and the horizontal lines are pounds.
Great graph! Yes.. I remember the story behind most of my random high blips too. It’s definitely important to be able to enjoy your family life and social life as well as staying on track.
Thanks RaggedClown. I haven't heard of that before but great advice. I'll look it up. Glad to hear that you are settled now. It's a big upheaval moving countries. I moved from England to Australia and it was big adjustment. Anyway I hope your chart keeps sailing on down. Cheers.
This is great for me to see today. My chart looks like yours except I’m stuck at the top of the second hump right now! We record in a similar way though, and I’m coming up for 3 years here. Thanks for the inspiration- there is a downhill on the other side!! What happened to help you get going on that last bit?
I check everyday so that I can see if I am going off track .at my last weigh in I had gained 2lbs more from last week .As of yesterday I had dropped 3lbs from the 2gained .So I feel I helps me to see when I am going wrong.
Yes. Exactly. The red dots are a kind of warning signal that you are of track. A single red dot is nothing to worry about but two or three in a row and you know that you need to think about what you are doing wing. You miss that if you only weigh in once per week.
I'm looking forward too a great weekend-long walk with my dog with Mariachi Singers at the pub this evening. Ii hope your weekend is great too!
I weigh daily too, something which my mum shouts at me for (I am 32 and live alone and yes my mother still shouts at me 😂😂😂), I do it just to keep an eye on what's going on, I can gain weight very quickly. When it does go up, and it does ☹️, I can see it before it gets out of control and then I just increase my exercises to compensate, I tend not to alter my calorie intake as I eat fairly healthy unless I've been with friends or family so increasing exercises for a few days following a night out or family meal can counteract the extra pounds but if you only weight once a week you won't find out for upto 6 days and that 1 or 2 pound could turn into 6+ pounds which is much harder to loose.
That's right Jenni. If my weight goes up a pound or two, I don't give it any thought. But if it stays up the next day and the next day, it's time to take action.
Thanks for coming here to offer support and I hope we can do the same for you
