Skinny fat

Hi I don’t weigh much 9stone 5 but I have lots of fat on my tummy, I’m wondering what’s the best thing I can do , I know you can’t spot reduce. I have relatively skinny arms and legs but an obese mid section , bum , top of thighs. Thanks

Hi Pitterpatter3 .

You sound a bit like me before my weight loss - I had quite slender arms/ calves/ ankles, but was blobby from armpits to thighs. From my own experience I can say that my midsection has improved a lot since I lost weight - stands to reason I suppose: if that's where the fat goes on, that's where it comes off.

Although I know you can't spot-reduce fat, I do think you can tone muscles in that region through the right kind of exercise. I have toned up my "spare tyre" region although I do have a bit of a mum-tum still and I don't think that is ever going to be flat. My thighs and behind have definitely benefited from my cycling - although it hasn't made them small, at least they are not fat! So if you find the right exercise for your mid-section that should help. I think hula-hooping is good but I probably don't do it enough. There used to be a lot of "legs, bums and tums" exercise classes, you might find something of that sort locally. But weight loss will help a lot.

Best of luck!

Thank you for this post, bikegirrrl, it's so encouraging! I have the same problem, I'm ok according to the scales, but have a 34" waist. At least I think I have but I don't really know where to measure. It says find your hip bone and your bottom rib and measure halfway between, but my bones have disappeared beneath a great load of unnecessary flab round my middle, and I can't find them.

I have been doing this diet for 3 weeks now and have lost 5lbs, and I can now feel a rib if I press hard enough, but I'm not sure if it's the bottom one!

I could never do hoola hooping as a child, but I think it's now time for me to learn!

I love this website ,it's so helpful and also fun.

I used to just measure the "slimmest" bit (using the term loosely!) around my middle.

I agree with you, this website has been a godsend for me. Cheering you on!
