Sixty year old who wants to change - once and for all

I'm new today. I've been yoyo dieting all my adult life. I eat a very healthy diet but just too much. When I'm stressed I over eat and treat myself with chocolate. I'm in my sixties and I have been a size 8 and a size 18.

I drink a bottle of white wine every night which adds to the calories. I know it's bad for my health although I have done it for many years and function well. I am still working.

I currently weigh 11 and a half stone and would like to be 9 and a half stone. So two stone to go. My plan is one stone before I go on holiday in September and another by Christmas.

I grow a lot of my own veg and am almost vegetarian and have had spells in my life as a vegan and have a passion for fruit and veg. I know what to do I just need encouragement. My husband is a real foodie and a feeder and doesn't need to lose weight.

I have had spells of going to the gym but find it tough. I would prefer pilates or yoga.

I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol and I take medication for both. I have managed to get off meds by diet and exercise before but have lapsed badly.

If there's anyone out there that could offer advice I would be very happy!

Welcome Pidge,

My second time here in two and a half years. The first time I followed cal counting and within 6 months I lost 18kgs. Eventually I put most of it back on and am back again.

This time around I'm heeding some of the advice on carb control. When you read the first link that BridgeGirl has supplied it will give you a good insight as to why that may be the way forward. Apart from anything else, it appears to have cut out the crazy evening cravings that I used to have.

One way I'd summarise that is by saying if you keep doing the same thing and it doesn't work, maybe it's time to think about doing something different :)

Best of luck! :) :)

I just thought I would say hello, I am new as well, 2nd week, you will get loads of support, and many different threads here, your honesty and openness will touch many people, I am a comfort eater, I think many people are....good luck, isn't 60 the new 40? it is in my book...it will work out for you, read the different posts, real life changes all for the better...😊

Welcome Pidge25. I know it feels daunting, we’ve all been there, but you’ve made a start now. Sounds like you have a good understanding of your situation, and I can relate to it, it’s so easy to take comfort in food when things are stressful, and that’s not an easy habit to break. But you already have a healthy diet and it’s a bonus that you love fruit and veg, so there’s so many nice things you can enjoy that are healthy.

As H61g says, come and join us for the Friday weigh-ins, you’ll get lots of support.

Hello! Good for you for take action! I learned something interesting from my doctor a few years ago that may be useful for you - pain killers, some medication and crucially alcohol can increase cholesterol. The liver has finite capacity and processes the things that are most Poisonous first. Cholesterol comes last apparently, and the cholesterol in our blood goes up when we consume those other things, because the liver hasn’t had time to deal with it. It’s possible the daily bottle of wine may be contributing to your cholesterol.... which I doubt you wanted to hear. I’ve been fortunate not to suffer from cholesterol but when I was taking a vitamin a medication for a skin condition, then had a root canal and lived off paracetamol for a few days, my cholesterol levels exploded. Good luck with it all. X
