I don’t quite understand...

So I am considering the LCHF as a complete change to the low fat, low GI plan I’ve been using. However I’ve just logged an apple which MFP tells me has 21g carbs. That’s over the 20g daily limit already. The yoghurt was 12g carbs. Have I totally misunderstood that limit?

The limit of 20g carbs, is net carbs (ie without the fibre)

When going through the induction phase of LCHF, fruit is not recommended, as it is high carb. Berries are a better choice. Have a look at this dietdoctor.com/low-carb/fruits

Better to have double cream than a yoghurt - 1.6g carbs per 100g. Is it a fruit yoghurt?

You have to rethink the foods that you eat, sticking to protein with natural fat and leafy greens, mainly.

Thank you. A very useful link. I think this is going to take me a while to get my head around though!

Ive recentky started the same journey. I used mfp too and it was a while before i realised that it doesnt work out the net carbs for you. You need to look at the nutrition breakdown and subract fibre from your carbs total. The answer is net carbs - which is what youre trying to keep low. Good luck !! It gets easier as you learn what foods are low carb. Full fat greek yoghurt or plant based yoghurts are better for low carb.

Frankly, all of these apps seem to cause more trouble than they're worth. Many of them simply aren't designed to work with low-carb plans.

There's a very nice set of graphics on the DietDoctor website which shows you which foods to avoid and which can be eaten ad lib. Memorizing those pictures is far easier than stressing over how exactly how many grams of this or that you've eaten.

Incidentally, I noticed when I was in the UK last year that virtually all the yoghurts are full of rubbish (especially the ones with health claims on them!). Some supermarkets don't carry anything that would meet the dictionary definition of yoghurt (fermented milk and nothing else). Check the ingredients.
